  Film Review - Hairspray
Waters flirted with the mainstream with Hairspray (1988), his first film in seven years, and, by his admission, one of few obsessions that was "palatable" to any studio.
The lavish $2.6 million budget for Hairspray brought about major changes: It allowed for cappuccino in the editing room, Waters didn't have to pick up the cast in the morning, and when it rained the cast got ponchos.
Hairspray is more than a nostalgic romp filled with ratted hairdos and goofy hits--its key subplot reveals Waters' obsession with the incendiary politics of style.

Those who haven't been initiated into his depraved world may be surprised to learn that this was the first of his new line of films tamed, if not for the whole family, at least for mainstream audiences.
Hairspray is undeniably lighter than a bouffant, but Waters' weirdness shines through the screenplay.
As long as you keep this film in its proper perspective, it should be fine for just about any age group, though I doubt young children would be interested.

 Monstervision Host Segments for Hairspray
And no wonder Baltimore is the film capital of the world, with an accent so thick it sounds like a foreign language, waterfront bars filled with hillbilly truck drivers who come to cruise the half-finished transsexuals, pumped up on estrogen, who hang out between medical appointments at Johns Hopkins.
"Hairspray" is the early-sixties high school musical about a dancing chubster played by Ricki Lake who misbehaves to her mama, played by Divine, to become a pro-integration cha-cha'ing teenage idol.
All right, we're here watching John's film "Hairspray." I hear the "Corny Collins Show" is based on a real show you had here in Baltimore when you were growing up, and they dealt with the same issues you deal with in the movie.

OK, so the new musical "Hairspray" doesn't offer a cure for cancer, or the nose-diving Dow for that matter, but if the infectious jubilation currently spritzing from the stage of the Neil Simon Theater were bottled and sold across the country like, say, hairspray, consumer confidence would not be a problem.
In the second act of the new musical Hairspray, Edna and Wilbur--in the form of priceless Harvey Fierstein and never-better Dick Latessa--declare their undying affection for each other and pride in their daughter, Tracy, in a number called "Timeless to Me," and they couldn't be more captivating.
Those involved in the musical Hairspray have remained faithful to the outlines of the plot and spirit of the film; they've naturally found any number of jokes and song ideas in Waters' screenplay, and have, of course, retained the notion of a male performer in drag taking the role of Edna.

The film, while providing nonstop fun and laughs throughout, also manages to not only confront but to roll right over prejudice in several of its nefarious guises.
I was a teenager when this film came out, and sadly, it was the death of Divine (just before the movie was released) that made me aware of this film.
As for the film, it's extremely campy in the best of ways, overflowing with great singing and dancing from the early 1960s, and it is the type of film that makes you feel good after you watch it.

HAIRSPRAY TICKET | HAIRSPRAY THE MUSICAL | HAIRSPRAY TICKETS
There's much to say about the new musical adapted from the 1988 film by John Waters, but it's probably best to begin by pointing out that it has finally arrived at Broadway's Neil Simon Theatre and won't be leaving any time soon.
The other good news is that, while Hairspray can easily be compared with a number of other musical comedies of the last couple of seasons, in its own way it leaves each in the dust.
Hairspray may not be a transcendent experience and it may not change your life, but it is incredibly entertaining.

Sweetly sincere 'Hairspray' holds up to film, Broadway versions - The Boston Globe
Based on the 1988 John Waters film, "Hairspray" is about the travails of Tracy Turnblad (played beautifully by newcomer Bridie Carroll), a 1960s Baltimore teenager whose dream to be a star on a popular local TV dance show sweetly morphs into a battle over inclusion among the city's white and fl teenagers.
Tracy's first hurdle is that she is not a size 2 and is therefore well outside the range of the kind of teen featured on the show.
While "Hairspray" is not necessarily profound, it is sincere in addressing how underdogs and outsiders of all kinds can beat the system and dance their way to acknowledgment.

 Talkin' Broadway Review: Hairspray
After seeing the new cast of Hairspray at the Neil Simon Theatre, it seems 1962 Baltimore is almost as hard to populate as 1959 Broadway.
Hairspray, like The Producers, was originally a film conceived and directed by someone with a heavily over-the-top sensibility - in this case, John Waters.
Performers in both shows need to be able to match the antic energy the creators instilled in the material; simply meeting the vocal and physical demands of the roles isn't enough.

True to its name, Hairspray is devoted to uplift, and in the broadest terms, it is about empowerment and liberation.
Tracy’s spunky quest to succeed despite her unconventional looks is one variation on this theme; another is her movement to integrate the "Corny Collins Show" so that her new fl friends can be in on the dancing.
But what Hairspray is really about is fun, and here it succeeds phenomenally well; I have yet to meet anyone who dislikes this show, a rare phenomenon in the frequently bitter theater crowd.
