The Hakarimata range is a general term given to the hills and coastal ranges of the Waikato region of New Zealand, lying between the floodplain of the Waikato River and the Tasman Sea.
Parts of the range are protected in scenic reserves near the towns of Huntly and Ngaruawahia, and in the Pirongia Forest Park.

Currently there are a few persistent areas of Tradescantia and some convolvulus (bindweed) but much of the area has been cleared of weeds and a range of native plants has been established.
The land for the Hakarimata project is Waikato District Council road reserve.
It took a long time to have ownership acknowledged by the council and it was important to have permission from the landowner.

We camped the first night at the Crucible Stream junction, then stayed in the comfortable Siberia hut the second night (which proved fortuitious since it poured while we were sleeping).
The route was along the Rees Valley to the Rees Saddle, continue to the Dart River and then walk over the Cascade saddle to Mt Aspiring Hut, and walk out to the end of the road in the Matukituki Valley.
The Urewera ranges seem almost eerie and primordial, compared to other parts of the country.

Behind the camp property is the Hakarimata range and the scenic reserve, where 1602 hectares of public land have been set aside.
You have a choice of turning off at the signpost to camp (3 hrs), going along to Parker's road (8 hrs) or going to the Hakarimata trig and return via the old reservoir track to Ngaruawahia (approx 5 hrs).
You can return the same way or proceed up steep climb to Hakarimata trig, returning via track to CYC or Waingaro road (add 1 hour).

 Te ARAROA - The Long Pathway
That gives choice for a through hiker approaching the metropolis of traversing Auckland via the wild west coast, or the gentle east.
South of Auckland, the trail unwinds through the Hunua Range, then cuts along the Mangatawhiri River to Meremere.
It follows the Waikato River to Huntly, piggybacks on the existing Hakarimata Walkway to Ngaruawahia, then cleaves again to the riverbank to reach Hamilton.

 EW Possum Control for Hakarimata Range
Possum control could be on the cards for the northern Hakarimata Range, with the Northern Hakarimata Walkway Committee, the Department of Conservation and Environment Waikato working together with landowners to come up with a management plan.
The Northern Hakarimata Walkway Committee recently received a grant from the Perry Foundation to help fund possum control in northern part of the Ranges.
Possum control is planned for the northern half of the Range only this year, but it is likely the operation will expand to the southern half of the Range in the next couple of years.

Once some height is gained you then run along the top of the range which goes up and down a bit.
You will pass a track to your right for the youth camp but you want to proceed to the next track further along on the right.If you reach the trig station you have just missed the turnoff.

In 1995/96, Genesis selected three tributaries of the Waikato River draining the Hakarimata Range between Huntly and Ngaruawahia for restoration.
The headwaters of all three streams are in native forest but, prior to restoration, livestock could access the waterways and vegetation.
One objective was to establish a native forest corridor along the streams to connect the canopy in the Hakarimata Scenic Reserve with the Waikato River and to encourage indigenous fish to become resident in these streams.

My morning stroll was along the Hakarimata Range to Ngaruwahia, which was meant to be a six hour stretch.
I pushed on to the top past all the beaconing benches until I reached the viewpoint but being deep in the fog the panoramic wasn't up to much.
It was a bush covered range so the fog further helped keep the temperature at a comfortable tramping level.

NIWA has been studying the Mangaotama Stream in the Hakarimata Ranges near Hamilton intensively for the past 9 years to investigate the effects of land use on stream ecosystems, as part of the River Ecosystems and Landuse Interactions programme, funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST).
We collect stream invertebrates using a range of methods, including freeze-coring and pump-sampling for subsurface invertebrates, Surber sampling for creatures living on the stream bed, drift netting, and sticky-, Malaise- and light-trapping to collect aquatic insects (adult stages) above the water.
We found 188 species in the Mangaotama Stream compared with the previous records of 144 species reported in an Auckland stream in 1981, and 182 species in a Westland stream in 1985.

A small but positive group of 16 interested people attended a meeting in Huntly last night to discuss proposed possum control for the Hakarimata Range.
The Northern Hakarimata Walkway Committee received funding to control possums in the northern half of the Range.
They have enlisted Environment Waikato and DoC to help co-ordinate the operation which is to be done in September.

The Hakarimata Scenic Reserve near Ngaruawahia is a great place to see kauri, especially the large kauri on the Kauri Loop Track.
Twenty minutes walk from the top viewpoint on the Kauri Loop Track, there is an excellent lookout with views south across Hamilton.
The Hakarimata Walkway continues along the undulating crest of the Hakarimata Range with occasional views out to the west and east, and ends at Waingaro Rd.
