The Sanyo line was designed as part of the eventual nationwide shinkansen network, with a nominal design speed of 260 km/h and minimum curve radii of 4,000 m.
The line was extended from Morioka to Hachinohe in December 2002.
The line from Fukushima to Yamagata covers a distance of approximately 90 km, of which 28 km are single track (Sekine to Uzen-Nakayama section).
