An old European source mentions a hake that was transplanted from the coast of Ireland to Cape Cod.
Since the Irish immigration to America, the hake has followed in the wake of their masters, as it is now found in New York bay, in the waters around Boston, and off Cape Cod.
A lot of hake is eaten in Spain, where it is known as merluza.

White hake is a groundfish species belonging to the gadoid or cod family of fishes.
White hake are restricted in distribution to the western Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the southern part of the Grand Banks of Newfoundland southward to Cape Hatteras.
Hake at one year of age are approximately 20 cm, 34 cm at two years, and 45 cm at three years.

The white hake, Urophycis tenuis, occurs from Newfoundland to Southern New England and is common on muddy bottom throughout the Gulf of Maine.
Depth distribution of white hake varies by age and season; juveniles typically occupy shallower areas than adults, but individuals of all ages tend to move inshore or shoalward in summer, dispersing to deeper areas in winter.
Under this FMP white hake are included in a complex of 15 groundfish species which has been managed by time/area closures, gear restrictions, minimum size limits and, since 1994, direct effort controls including a moratorium on permits and days-at-sea restrictions under Amendments 5 and 7 to the FMP.

The silver hake is the most important summer spawner among Gulf of Maine fishes that are important commercially, just as the haddock is for spring and the pollock for autumn.
Silver hake are familiar fish all around the coasts of the Gulf of Maine from Cape Cod to the Bay of Fundy and to the west coast of Nova Scotia.
And nearly all of the silver hake that come close enough inshore to enter the traps in the southwestern part of the Gulf, or to strand on the beaches there, are good sized individuals of 9 inches and larger.
