  Hakea
Hakeas have been known in cultivation overseas since the 1790's when they were introduced into the British Isles where some species are still grown in public gardens.
Many Hakeas have narrow leaves with sharp points which leads to common names such as "needle bush" and "needlepoints" This is an adaption to avoid drying out as very little leaf area is exposed to the sun and moisture loss from the leaf surface is reduced.
The flowers of Hakeas in the Sydney region tend to be in clusters to 2-3cm in diameter.

 Grafted Hakea
Over the past twenty years, grafted Hakea have been produced commercially and successfully grown in a variety of soils in gardens in eastern states; even in Adelaide or northern Victoria, in home gardens that are frequently watered or fertilized more than would usually be tolerated by these dry country species.
Hakea salicifolia is often quoted as being resistant to the cinnamon fungus, so it is not surprising that grafted plants have survived in these conditions.
Hakea laurina: This species is in wide demand but it is often difficult to grow on it own roots.

The flower clusters on the sea urchin hakea Hakea petiolaris earn its descriptive name: rounded and spiky, they look like they'd be quite at home on the ocean floor.
Like other hakeas, this species is prickly in another way, as well: its leaves are stiff with sharp points along their edges.
This defensive characteristic makes the hakea an excellent boundary plant, and it provides safe haven to birds and other small wildlife seeking to escape from predators.
