Fremantle Prison was constructed in the 1850s by Edmund Henderson, with designs by Henry Wray using convict labour and limestone quarried on-site.
In 1907 after the Gold rushes in Western Australia and the rapid population growth in the area, the prison was expanded with the construction of New Division to the north, built by contractors with stone from quarries at Rottnest Island.

This included the escapes of Cross and double murderer Brian William Edwards from the minimum-security Karnet Prison Farm, and the hostage-taking and repeated rape of a female prison officer at Bunbury regional prison by serial sex offender Paul Keating.
A series of Justice Department documents produced by Mr Quinlan at the hearing showed pilots of the new prisoner assessment system, a new assessment centre based at Hakea Prison, and a new case-management process were incomplete and not properly evaluated when Mr McGinty rolled-out the changes.

Oates enjoys the whiff of freedom - Business - www.smh.com.au
However, Oates says his time behind bars in Hakea was a pleasant change from the cramped Polish cell he shared for seven months in the winter of 1996 with a local man accused of illegally selling coal.
However, what appears to irritate him most about the combined two years he has spent in prison in Poland and Perth awaiting trial is that he was repeatedly considered too much of a flight risk to be freed on bail.
Oates says that being imprisoned in Hakea made it difficult for him to mount his defence - and had he not been incarcerated, the prosecution blunder which led to his trial being aborted on October 1 may have been avoided.
