The caliber of the rifle was changed from 6.5x55mm to 7.97 (8mm) Mauser, reportedly due to the large amounts of 8mm Mauser ammunition left over from WWII in the country at the time.
The Hakim was pretty much a reserve rifle during the six day war and was totally replaced by the Rashid, a smaller version of the rifle chambered in 7.62x39mm by the 1960s and the Egyptian Maddi AK47 derivative by the 1970s.
Once the bolt and carrier are propelled fully to the rear and the empty case is clear from the rifle, the return spring pushes the bolt and carrier forward, stripping another round from the magazine and locking it in place.

This is the system used on the AR-15/M-16 series of rifles, where a tube conducts gas from a port in the barrel directly to the bolt carrier.
The rifle uses a 10 round detachable box magazine, and can be fitted with a bayonet, of the sort used on Swedish Mauser rifles.
It is easier to load the rifle using stripper clips for the Swedish Mauser, rather than remove the mag; the front latch makes it a little clumsy to keep pulling the mag off and back on to the gun.

It made use of some novel features in it's design, one of the more interestign was the muzzle brake on the rifle which helped reduce gases.
With the countries descent into backing the Soviet Block the Hakim was phased out of service as vast numbers of AK-47's were introduced into the military pipeline".

 French WW1 RSC1917 semi-auto rifle *
After WW1 most of the RSC1917's were modified by converting them to bolt actions, the gas "ports" or elbows were eliminated, they were updated to use the 20's ammo & marked "N" on the receiver, very few of the 1917's are found with a complete gas system.
Oddly the rifle was designed to use a specific 5rd clip!, the Lebels & Berthiers used the same round, the Berthiers used 2 different clips & the RSC1917 another!, a logistics nightmare
most French military rifles produced prior to 1928 were reworked to use a later version of the 8mm round, early rifles that had these mods were marked on the chamber & barrel w/the "N" marking to indicate this, it meant balle N which was the designation of the modernized cartridge.
