The fish of Hakodate is the ika, Japanese for cuttlefish.

Hakodate-yama, situated to the southwest of Hakodate, facing the Tsugaru Straits, is also known as Mt. Ka-gyu-san because its shape resembles that of a cow lying down (ka meaning "lying down" and gyu meaning "cow").
