Hokkaido is the Northernmost and second biggest of the Home Islands.
I missed out on Hokkaido for a variety of different reasons last year which made me determined to go this year, so when Glyn said that he knew someone from work who was organising a trip and that there was room for a few more I promptly put my name down.
We originally wanted to go to Sapporo which is the main city in Hokkaido but that would have cost a fortune and we didn't have much money.

The southwestern Hokkaido city of Hakodate on Wednesday absorbed the four nearby municipalities of Toi, Esan, Minamikayabe and Todohokke, marking the first municipal merger in Hokkaido since 1973, city officials said.
The merger has increased Hakodate's population by about 17,000 to 299,612 and nearly doubled its land area to about 678 square kilometers.
Hakodate remains the third most populous city in the prefecture.

The war ended in early 1869 with the siege of Hakodate, Hokkaido.
The defeat of the armies of the former shogun (led by Hijikata Toshizo) marked the end of the Meiji Restoration; all defiance to the emperor and his rule ended.

There are numerous scenic spots around Hakodate City, which is located at the tip of the Oshima-hanto Peninsula in the southern part of Hokkaido.
Hakodate-yama, situated to the southwest of Hakodate, facing the Tsugaru Straits, is also known as Mt. Ka-gyu-san because its shape resembles that of a cow lying down (ka meaning "lying down" and gyu meaning "cow").
The Trappistine Convent, 30 minutes by bus from Hakodate Station, was founded by eight sisters sent from France in 1898, and has statues of the Virgin Mary and Joan of Arc in the front courtyard.

The group began planning a monument last December in response to local complaints at there being no monument to Perry, who contributed enormously to the development of the port city, they said.
