The Hakone checkpoint on the historical Tokaido road marks the beginning of Japan's Kanto region, and the annual Hakone Ekiden at the New Year runs from Tokyo to Hakone and back over two days, partly in commemoration of the Tokaido road.
Hakone hosts substantial tourist activity, and many, both Japanese and international visitors come to Hakone to relax, for treatment at the health resorts, or to visit the parks and mountains.

We took a break from the travelling and stopped at the Hakone Open-Air museum with lots of outdoor sculptures and a large indoor Picasso collection.

We then took the Hakone Ropeway up the mountain and as we crossed over a peak we has amazing views of Mount Fuji, which the Japanese refer to as Fuji-san.
I told them which Nova school I work at and I think they were joking with each other that they were going to come take lessons from me. When I parted ways with the women they gave me a bag of candy to take with me. Japanese people are great.

I was in Hakone as a child and have vague memories of: a steep railway?
Last time I was there, I stayed with my family at Hakone Hotel, not a ryokan, at Hakone-machi on the other side of the lake from Togendai.
I found several good ones that include the ropeway and boat ride routes and that would help you visualize it as you are looking at locations of hotel/ryokan accomodations.
