Random Neural Misfirings: Hakone, Day 2
This is no joke: one could buy one ticket that would take you on the ropeway, transfer to the funicular, transfer to the Hakone-tozan line, and transfer to the Odakyu line.
Since Hakone is a touristy town, we were tourists, and it seemed the touristy thing to do, we took the 早雲山ケープルカー to its terminus, where Gwen wanted to transfer to the even more touristy ropeway.
Along with at least a half-dozen private rail lines that feed the outlying areas.

At the end of the line, you change to a cable car, which takes you up higher and higher, and eventually you reach the beginning of a series of ropeways that take you over the top of the the mountain, and down to the lake on the other side.
Apparently, other than the line work, we found out later that there had also been a problem which has brought down the overhead wires, so there were no trains going to the city at all.
From Osaka, we took the Loop line to Morinomiya, and after a little confused walking around, found the Hotel we were staying at.

Three excursions offer respite from the hustle and bustle of the megalopolis
The principal rail line leading west from Tokyo, the Tokaido, takes its name from a historic road that once linked Edo to the ancient capital, Kyoto; sections of the old highway still can be seen at Hakone, a one-time Tokaido rest stop in the mountains west of Tokyo.
There's even a special ticket called the Hakone Free Pass that covers all of the various forms of transportation from Odawara or Hakone-Yumoto and affords reduced-rate admission to most of the museums and assorted tourist attractions that dot the way.
Not covered by the pass is admission to the Hakone Open-Air Museum (near Chokoku-no-mori Station on the Hakone Mountain Railway), a spectacular example of what can be accomplished by wielding large amounts of cash on the international art market.

Welcome to The International Railway Traveler (IRT)
The Hakone Barrier is evidence preserved of Japan's divided feudal past, and we will stop to see it during a round trip through Hakone using the interesting variety of funicular, cable-car, "historic" ship and bus.
The Chuo Line ends at Nagoya, but we will continue on the Tokaido Line via Sekigahara (scene of a key battle in 1600) to historic Kyoto, Japan's former capital.
Tokyo's subway lines alone carry 7.5 million people a day and 1.5 million rail and subway passengers use just one station (Shinjuku).
