Hakui has a lot of curious stories like this and because of this got its nickname, "The UFO Town".
Hakui is 7 hours away from Tokyo, 4.5 hours away from Osaka, 4 hours away from Nagoya, 1 hour away from Toyama and 50 minutes away from Kanazawa by car.
Hakui has a 8 km beach by the name of Chirihama and several temples and shrines.

An official from Hakui said Friday the city has been looking into the requisites for becoming a data base on the mysteries of the universe - with particular emphasis on the research on unidentified flying objects.
Researchers in Hakui, located on the Japan sea coast 310 miles west of Tokyo, already have spent 10 years acquiring documentation on UFO sightings.
Johsen Takano, 38, who works for the Hakui municipality and is a prime mover behind the UFO center, told the Kyodo News Service, documents were also obtained from countries such as Britian, France and Canada.

Stranger still is that when plans for the Hakui Space museum were first announced in 1989 by the Mayor of Hakui city, Kazuo Shiotani, he had no doubts about the aim and purpose of including UFOs in such a museum.

Takanashi's paper goes on to describe an apparent effort on the part of certain Hakui city officials to draw tourism to the small (population 27,000) and rather out-of-the-way village by establishing Hakui as "the town of UFOs" in Japan, somewhat as Roswell, New Mexico has done in the United States.

Further into Huneeus' article it becomes clear that Johsen Takano, the "Japanese government official" who spoke to Andrews at the United Nations, is actually an employee of the Hakui City Council, as well as being a long-time UFO buff.

Colin Andrews writes concerning the Hakui Museum, "Let me first tell you that there WAS a plan to feature the UFO and Crop Circles in the museum and that it WAS named The Hakui Space and UFO Museum." And asks, "How can I know?" and proceeds to try to prove it.
Takano is a very enthusiastic UFO fan, belonging to the local UFO group, "Hakui Mystery Club", and was a driving force and the planner of the successful first Space and UFO Symposium in 1991, he may have naturally been wishing to create a museum mainly related to the UFO subject.
The answer is very obvious: the Hakui Museum has never been the government planned museum and the idea of its gorgeous debut to the world as the specialized "UFO Museum" was only someone's dream...

In this famous Hakui festival the young men carry the mini shrine to a small channel and put it on two boats.
We headed back to the station and I was supposed to be in Hakui at 5.30pm to meet Mary to go for a jog and then go back to my place for dinner.
