The carnival shut down after a series of events involving Count Olaf and the Baudelaires.
Unfortunately, the V.F.D. headquarters was burned down by rogue members of the organization, who set fire to each room individually over a period of time, such that the destruction would go unnoticed until it was too late.
The walls of the conical entrance to the grotto are decorated in mosaics depicting noble events from the history of a secret organization known as V.F.D., as well as portraits of the famous writers, scientists, artists, musicians, philosophers, and chefs who inspired its members.

And Roger Robinson, masters marathoning legend and college English professor, presents the second installment of his Running in Literature series, this one containing literary references to Pheidippides, which explain in detail the evolution of the legend.

The book is very well paced, and a bit darker than some of the others in the series, but just as silly as well.
An unfortunate accident leads to a Violently Freaky Death, and Justice Strauss calls for a trial, ordering the accused Baudelaires and Count Olaf to be locked in rooms until their case is called.
The longest book in the series, it is the one that has the least to say, advancing the plot not one iota, which here means "we're pretty much the same place we started after 353 pages".
