Corran Horn is a character who fits a number of the criteria for being a "Gary Stu": he is an exceptionally skilled fighter pilot who also happens to be a Jedi Knight, had a tragic background, and effectively is the most major of major characters in the first four X-wing novels.
HalHorn, born Valin Halcyon, was the son of Nejaa Halcyon and Scerra Halcyon, adopted son of Rostek Horn, the husband of Nyche Horn and father of Corran Horn.
Horn became a prominent agent of Corellian Security, and worked as a team with his son, who followed in his footsteps.
Horn died while on a mission, at the hand of the bounty hunter Bossk.
Hal was the one assigned to investigate the death of Wedge's parents.
Hal was sitting in a booth with a small human male and a female Quarren when Bossk came in, pulled a blaster carbine from beneath his cloak, and shot all three of them.
Hal was shot twice high in the chest, where he slammed up against the back of the booth before sliding to the floor.
He took control of Booster Terrik's operation when Booster was sent to Kessel by HalHorn, and created a successful smuggling operation, although his operation was small compared to what the Hutts had.

Unfortunately, Hal was killed by the bounty hunter Bossk on an ill-fated CorSec mission in which Corran was also a participant.
Authors Note: I couldn’t seem to figure, using a couple of timelines, out how HalHorn could have been 10 when the Clone Wars ended and then Corran be only a couple of years younger than Wedge and Luke.

Like its namesake "Cinerama" production of 1957, the 1931 British release Windjammer was filmed during the actual voyage of a sailing vessel, the "Grace Harwar." The five-month voyage began in South Australia and ended in England, requiring a tricky negotiation around Cape Horn.

During one of his training simulations, Corran tried to change the basic set of maneuvers for the Requiem scenario, slowing to a near-stop to trying and draw the TIE fighters, and TIE bombers to him and away from the Redemption.
