McRae was named Designated Hitter of the Year three times by The Sporting News; his 133 RBI in 1982 topped the league and set a Royals record.
In June 1985, McRae's son Brian, a shortstop, was selected in the first round of the free agent draft by the Royals.
McRae the younger made his major-league debut as an outfielder with Kansas City in 1990, and his father was hired as the club's skipper in 1991, two years after being inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame.

Hal McRae, considered one of the greatest designated hitters in baseball history; was a standout athlete at Douglas High School in Sebring, Florida, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball.

Hal was actually offered the Royals managerial job late in 1987 after Billy Gardner was canned and just after Hal was released as a player.
There was a time when I thought firing Hal McRae was the turning-point decision that brought the Royals down, but it's hard to make that claim, unless you truly believe each field manager the Royals have hired has been worse than the previous one.
