  Halcion
Halcion is used for short-term treatment of insomnia.
When Halcion is used every night for more than a few weeks, it loses its effectiveness to help you sleep.
Abrupt discontinuation of Halcion should be avoided, since it has been associated with withdrawal symptoms (convulsions, cramps, tremor, vomiting, sweating, feeling ill, perceptual problems, and insomnia).

Halcion: An Independent Assessment of Safety and Efficacy Data   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
WASHINGTON -- The sleeping pill Halcion is safe and effective when used as recommended on the label approved by the Food and Drug Administration, according to a new report* from a committee of the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
Halcion quickly became popular after it was approved by the FDA in 1982, largely because it was considered safer and was associated with less daytime residual grogginess than the alternatives.
This discrepancy may have occurred because once Halcion was marketed to the general public and became popular, adverse events were more likely to be detected.

Halcion, America's No. 1 bestselling insomnia drug, was recently banned in Great Britain and severely restricted in France.
Although the details of the British decision remain secret, they are known to involve evidence that the manufacturer, Upjohn, withheld adverse reaction data from the FDA and its British counterpart, the Committee on Safety of Medicine.
Holland ended up banning Halcion entirely until just recently, when it was reintroduced but only at doses of.25 mg and lower.

Public Citizen | Publications - Response to the Institute of Medicine's Report on Halcion. (HRG Publication #1431)
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, done in a hurried manner, is a waste of taxpayers dollars in that many of the questions it was asked/paid to answer by the Food and Drug Administation (FDA), had already been answered by the FDA before the committee's process had barely begun.
Instead of waiting to respond to our 1992 petition to ban Halcion until the report was finished, just as the IOM investigation was beginning, the FDA issued a denial of our petition (August 19, 1997), concluding that the drug was safe and effective enough to stay on the market.
Halcion is too dangerous to use and we advise anyone using it to ask their doctor to help them slowly withdraw from the drug--it is addicting--or switch to a safer sleeping pill.
