  Halcyon Days
Halcyon Days is their first collaboration, a meeting of the minds fueled by high desert ambience and a natural affinity for psychoactive sounds.
Halcyon Days explores via the extensive, diverse instrumental talents of Roach, Newby and Kent, the essential nature of sound itself: not merely what it is, but what it is created from, and in turn, what it creates.
Here, in the halcyon days of this trio's two weeks journeying together under the blessing of the gods, we experience the mystery of prolific collaboration, and the fruit of pure musical convergence.

 CRETE: RE:Halcyon days?
Halcyon is the word for "kingfisher", and the term comes from the story of Alcyone, in Greek mythology (see below).
The "Halcyon days" are spells of a week, sometimes more, of good, calm, warm, often sunny weather in the midst of the normally stormy, wet winter months (typically January).
Out of pity the gods changed the pair into kingfishers or halcyons, and Zeus forbade the winds to blow seven days before and after the winter solstice, the breeding season of the halcyon.

A mythical bird, identified with the kingfisher, that was fabled to nest at sea about the time of the winter solstice and to calm the waves during incubation.
It was a halcyon life, cocktails and bridge at sunset, white jackets and long gowns at dinner, good gin and Gershwin under the stars.
Halcyon derives from Latin (h)alcyon, from Greek halkuon, a mythical bird, kingfisher.

Interesting Thing of the Day: Halcyon Days   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Halcyon days are not a holiday as such, but more of a mythological tradition.
The Greek words from which the name halcyon is apparently derived mean, roughly, “sea” and “conceive.” Over the centuries, the term came to refer both to the kingfisher (an actual bird) and to the mythical bird that nested on the sea and mysteriously calmed the winds around the time of the winter solstice.
Unlike the mythical halcyon, kingfishers (of which there are several distinct species) dig holes to nest in, though the holes are sometimes found on river banks and in other spots close to the water.

Over the past three years, Halcyon Days have built themselves a reputation as possibly the most popular band on the Belfast club scene to operate within the Christian marketplace.
It is obvious that as a band they are more concerned with exposing truth in any of its forms than simply pushing one narrow agenda, but the band does not go to any lengths to hide their faith.
Given the strength of Belfast's Christian music output, and Orr's role within it (as well as playing in Halcyon Days, he is also one of the Maroons and runs a management company, Badger Management), I wondered what artists Halcyon Days have worked with.

 The Weather Doctor Almanac 2002
The Halcyon Days encompass the fourteen-day period centered on the Winter Solstice when the sea is commanded to be calm and the wind light by none other than Aeolus, keeper of the winds and one of the lesser Greek deities.
The Halcyon Days are not only associated with a stretch of calm seas and good weather but also with the kingfisher, a bird from an avian family found around the world.
Thus, in this winter month, wrote Simonides of Ceos, he "brings calm to fourteen days that earthlings call the time when the wind is forgotten, the holy breeding-season of the many-coloured alcyon." For this reason, mariners credit the kingfisher, or "alcyon bird," with the power to calm storms and raging seas.

Bruce Hornsby fans have their reasons for feeling defensive these days: Despite the stylistic virtuosity and his former gig as a Dead sideman, as a piano-playing, adult-aimed popster he's in danger of being lumped in with Norah Jones and her drowsy disciples.
HALCYON DAYS also requires a newer mindset than being stuck back in days of his power ballads.
Though "Dreamland" is a wonderful lullaby, I found it very commercial, while "Halcyon Days" (the single) itself is a meandering paean to the overwrought ballads for which Sting has become so well known.
