  Women Against Fundamentalisms
Haleh Afshar's position on fundamentalist women should be placed in the context of a deepen-ing identity crisis which many Iranian secularist women living in the West face.
Haleh Afshar is therefore quite right to claim the third-world popularity of the fundamentalist mes-sage.
In her WAF article, Halch Afshar claims that the 'Islamist' women's return to the 'source' is the desire to return to the 'golden age' of Islam.

Book Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Afshar begins the book with a rather poignant quote by Mernissi, and goes on to introduce the general theoretical framework of the book, which may be best explained in terms of an understudying of 'Islams'.
Afshar sets out her theoretical premise in the introductory chapter but does not carry it to it's final conclusion in terms of the particular case studies.
She also stresses the importance of distinguishing between secondary sources and Quranic teachings, which seem to be at the root of the particular biases concerning women, drawing on the works of such scholars as Ali Shariatti.

Tension in the middle east was heightened, there was a general backlash against ordinary Muslims everywhere and George W Bush has been able to use the excuse of carrying out a war on terrorism to try to justify his determination to finish his daddy’s quarrel with Saddam.
But fundamentally, says Haleh Afshar, the Iranian-born professor of politics at York University, the world hasn’t changed at all.
Yet gratifyingly, says Prof Afshar, the backlash against ordinary Muslims in this country and the United States has not been anything like as bad as it might have been.
