I thought it was amazing that even while the valley was glaciated, the top of Half Dome wasn't since it was so high.
Hell, decending the similar 400' of Quarter Dome (where I was, or whatever the shoulder of Half Dome is called) was bad enough.
The "saddle" between Half Dome and Quarter Dome where I hung out is in the middle of the photo.

The route we were considering to the top of Half Dome was 16.4 miles roundtrip and had an elevation gain of 4800 feet—a long haul under any circumstance, but for muscles already sore and fatigued it was beyond daunting.

To get to Half Dome, you'll have to climb out of this basin to the ridge to the North, and then march West climbing first the smaller hill adjacent to Half Dome, and then tackle the beast itself.
And even though the sign says that its 2.0 miles to Half Dome, we peg it at closer to 2.5 miles and a climb of 1850 feet.
Half Dome is world famous for this last bit, a "cable" climb.

Each year, SAS staff and friends hike to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, with their efforts benefiting Sierra Adoption Services' mission to help children find adoptive families.
On the trek to the top, the team wears T-shirts with a simple reminder: "If you think this is tough, try life without a family." It's the hardest hike many team members will ever do, and while they may not be all muscle, they definitely are all heart.
