Half eagles would go on to see almost continuous production from 1795 to 1929, and throughout their life, they would not only be used in trade but-in preference to almost any other gold coin-would be popularly found in Christmas stockings, especially in eastern towns and cities.
The contemporary half eagle coin minted since 1839 and in use at the end of the war had been designed by Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht.
When specie payments resumed in 1878, the half eagles were a convenient coin to redeem the large number of greenbacks still in circulation.

The remaining balance, including assay pieces totaling 528 for the half dollar and 226 for the quarter eagle, were returned to the mint at the close of the exposition and were subsequently melted.
The quarter eagle was distributed without holders at the Exposition, but additional coins were marketed through the Franklin Trust Company of Philadelphia in small envelopes bearing its name and address in blue ink.

Brief Overview of the U.S. History of Coinage
The first coins (silver half dimes) were produced in the months that followed, but not from the Mint building, still under construction - apparently being made at the coin press storage place.
A pattern in silver was made with the regular obverse die of the 1808 half eagle, and the reverse die of the previous type.
But the House and George Washington himself nixed the idea as 'monarchical.' Thus, "an impression emblematic of Liberty" and an eagle on the reverse of the gold and silver coins, and "United States of America" on the copper ones proved to be the winning compromise of House and Senate.

Although the "eagle"-based nomenclature for gold U.S. coinage is often assumed to be merely slang, the "eagle," "half-eagle" and "quarter-eagle" were specifically given these names in the Act of Congress that originally authorized them ("An Act establishing a Mint, and regulating Coins of the United States", section 9, April 2, 1792).
