Japanese toilet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Japanese sanitary equipment company TOTO produces a Japanese squat toilet with a built-in bidet, with a nozzle to clean the anus.
Many Japanese women are embarrassed at the thought that someone else can hear them while they are doing their business on the toilet (a condition known as Paruresis.) To cover the sound of bodily functions, many women flushed public toilets continuously while using them, wasting a large amount of water in the process.
In the often crowded living conditions of Japanese cities and the lack of rooms that can be locked from inside in a traditional Japanese house, the toilet is one of the few rooms in the house that allows for privacy.

In Japan, in her native country, she is "haafu," taken from the English word "half." Citizenship, nationality, race and ethnicity carry little meaning in this debate because in Japan they are perceived to be one and the same.
Even though I was born here, only in 1985 did I qualify for Japanese nationality after the law was changed to allow women here the same rights as men to pass on citizenship to their children.

 Splendid E-zine reviews: Half Japanese
Half Japanese possess a great spirit, one that rarely seems lost in the hundreds of Half Japanese songs that have been released over the years.
Part of the reason for their success must come from the way their songs have been invented (sometimes in mere minutes) and recorded (this usually takes a few minutes longer); since the band members are likeable, funny and plenty damn cool, the immediacy of their recordings keeps their innate beauty intact.
If you're one of those Half Japanese fans who thought the story ended with their two-CD greatest his collection, it's time to say hello to another Half Japanese.

Founded by brothers Jad and David Fair, Half Japanese was quite probably the most amateurish rock band to make a record since the Shaggs, all but ignoring musical basics like chords, rhythms, and melody.
In 1980, Half Japanese became the first band in history to release a three-record box set as their debut album; 1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts collected some of their earlier home recordings, while throwing in barely recognizable covers (the Temptations, Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan) and sound experiments cobbled together from guitar noise, electronics, and odd effects.
A documentary film on Half Japanese, titled The Band That Would Be King, after their recent album, was released to art-house theaters by director Jeff Feuerzeig, and T.E.C. Tones also reissued 1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts as a two-CD set.

Keith Richards once opined that any band could be the greatest one in rock and roll on any given night, and Half Japanese has held that honor more often than most.
But I'd begun to believe that band leader Jad Fair had lost the touch; their last couple albums sounded rote, and on recent tours the band was staffed by underfed skate-metal dudes whose contributions sounded irredeemably pedestrian compared to the sterling work of ex-members Maureen Tucker, Mark Jickling, and the Dreyfuss brothers.

Half Japanese is a band started by goof-off brothers in their parents' basement and they still sound like it and that's why they're great.
They succeeded making rock music that celebrated their lack of musical talent, creating a joyfully artless sound all about the fun of just making noise, a style which few would have the wherewithal or the chutzpah to attempt to replicate.
But Half Japanese's peculiar sonic primitivism turned out to have a huge impact on a wide range of music that followed, from punk to post-punk to indie rock to experimental music.
