Cher Scholar: The Cher Zine/The Gunslinger Ballads “Half Breed” was a very popular Cher song and it’s fun and light and as far as that goes, it’s a fine pop song, but as a sincere study of the plight of being a half breed, the song is missing some heart. This song was written by Mary Dean and Al Capps in the same dramatic narrative ballad vein as the song “Gypsies Tramps and Thieves.” The narrator of the song is typical among Cher narrative ballads, a disenfranchised woman in an exotic setting (see “Gypsies Tramps and Thieves,” “Dark Lady,” “Pirate”).
