Half a Loaf of Kung Fu (Dub Sub) - DVD Film: Totaltiorden.dk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
You see, this movie was made when Jackie first realized that kung fu movies were too serious and didn't have enough comedy in 'em, so he tried to make fun of 'em with this parody.
Jackie stars as a guy that is out to prove that he's a kung fu master, put all he could do is acrobatics and gymnastics.
I like funny kung fu flicks, but I gave this one a four instead of a five because it was a parody that made fun of a genre instead of adding comedy to it, which Jackie does in later movies.

Half a Loaf of Kung Fu (which I've always called "Pinch a Loaf of Kung Fu") is a perfect example of the comedy-kung fu genre.
Half a Loaf of Kung Fu is a reminder of a more innocent era in martial arts films.

Half a Loaf of Kung Fu (1978)
Review: Jackie first emerged as a comic kung fu star in Half a Loaf of Kung Fu, an early Lo Wei-produced kung fu comedy that is sustained by more enthusiasm than skill or wit.
But one nice touch occurs when Jackie is forced to read a kung fu manual while fighting Kam in order to learn some new moves.
It results in inferior kung fu choreography that is somewhat sloppy with Jackie intentionally relying too much on cheap gags and basic acrobatics.

Half a Loaf of Kung Fu - DVD Movie Central
It’s clear from the start that Chan’s purpose was to make a kung fu spoof, and having been given creative control for the first time in his career by legendary Hong Kong producer Lo Wei, he set out to do just that.
Eventually, he finds himself learning more and more kung fu, thanks to an unlikely old master and his flatulence-prone top student, and even serving as a bodyguard to a clan (and its master’s beautiful daughter) as they try to transport a sacred treasure through hostile territory.
Half a Loaf of Kung Fu proved Jackie Chan’s combined talents for action, comedy, and being ahead of his time.

Jackie Chan - Half a Loaf of Kung Fu
Half a Loaf of Kung Fu In Half a loaf of Kung Fu, Jackie plays a young man desperate for a job.
He then accidently kills his former boss and is only saved from a thorough thrashing by the woman when a passing beggar (who is also a Kung Fu master) intervenes.
This film was designed to poke fun at all the clichés of the traditional martial arts films (every beggar is a Kung Fu master, the really bad guys have moustaches and bad wigs etc.) and is very funny if you're at all familiar with such films.

DVD of the Week: (7/22/2000): Half A Loaf Of Kung Fu
Half A Loaf of Kung Fu was made when Jackie Chan was trying to break out of the routine costume melodramas and humdrum set-piece action movies that he was being slotted into.
Lo Wei Pictures were infuriated with Half A Loaf and threw it into the vault for a year.
Jiang's kung fu then quickly becomes an on-the-job training experience, as they're besieged from all sides (and from within) by enemies.

In 1964, at a kung fu demonstration at Long Beach, Bruce was recognized by Ed Parker, a television producer who was looking for someone to play Charley Chan's number one son in a proposed series.
After the Green Hornet, Bruce opened up another kung fu school called "Lee Jun Fan, Gung fu institute", this is where he learned to use the nunchaku's from fellow student Danny Inosanto, he had now become so popular, that he could charge $275 an hour.
He had premonitions that he would die at half his father's age of 64, which he did, at 32, also a protector of evil blew off his roof to warn away evil spirits, the previous occupants of his house had it blown off also and disaster had befallen them.

These new-found skills come in very handy when he is drawn into a series of showdowns with the countless bandits who are tracking the cargo and planning an attack.
By no means a classic, 'Half A Loaf Of Kung Fu' is still an undemanding and quite enjoyable early Chan film.
The comedy that punctuates the film is messy and scattershot as is the action, but the film retains a pleasant experimental flavour and when put into its historical context it is quite unconventional.

Half a Loaf of Kung Fu is to cheezy 1970s kung fu movies what Austin Powers is to spy movies.
As a straight physical comedy with some kung fu, the jokes are occasionally a bit puerile (hell, a farting kung fu master is, at best, funny once), but then again, so was much of what made Austin Powers funny, so perhaps I sell the prospective audience short.

The plot is classic Chan — he plays Jiang, a useless layabout who wants to find a job as a guard but doesn't know a lick of kung fu.
Naturally, Jiang gets lessons in kung fu, learning moves like "The Finger That Moves Mountains" (guess which finger it is) and redeems himself by spending the last half-hour of the film fighting a dozen different villains in his trademark comic style.
Half a Loaf of Kung Fu is hardly one of the better Chan films, but it offers solid laughs and some fine '70s-style kung fu — especially by the three primary women in the film, who more than hold their own with their male counterparts.

 Wu Ma
Thanks to his gnomish looks, Wu Ma generally was cast in comical or simpleton roles.
Most of his films from classic kung fu titles such as Half a Loaf of Kung Fu (1978) and Kung Fu of Eight Drunkards (1980) to the many supernatural tales of the '80's were comedies.
Yet, this did not stop him from appearing a wide variety of supporting roles over the years that included a dramatic role in Last Eunuch in China for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Seller's comments: Another early kung fu flick from Jackie Chan's Wei Lo period (Wei Lo, who also directed Fists of Fury with Bruce Lee, directed seven of Chan's early films), Spiritual Kung Fu (alternatively titled Karate Ghostbuster) has Chan playing a familiar character--the bumbling underdog.
The DVD transfer and voice dubbing are more akin to a Saturday afternoon television matinee than a technical tour de force, but the story certainly lends itself to its presentation.
A campy and uneven effort (what else can you say about a movie in which spirits don white body paint and bright red fright wigs?), Spiritual Kung Fu, like the Wei Lo-directed Half a Loaf of Kung Fu, was shelved for a couple of years before being released in 1978.
