Thanks to Sidney and star Steele, Half a Sixpence never gets too out of hand, though we'd argue with some of the eyestrain-inducing color choices in the bigger numbers.

But his function in the plot of Half a Sixpence is contrived and awkward, as if the movie eliminated banker characters and just gave their lines to this ham actor.

Half A Sixpence was written by David Heneker (music and lyrics) with the book by Beverley Cross.
It was first performed at the Cambridge Theatre, London on March 21, 1963 where it ran for 677 performances.

His novel "Kipps" was published in 1905 and he lived to see it filmed with Phyllis Calvert and Michael Redgrave as Ann Pornick and Arthur Kipps.
With his vision of the future, one wonders if he could visualise "Kipps" being turned into a musical play - "Half A Sixpence", which became a huge success both here and in America in the early 1960's.
