Hellfire Pass is the name of a railway cutting on the Death Railway in Thailand, known by the Japanese as Konyu cutting.
Visitors to the museum usually base themselves in Kanchanaburi and it is possible to roll into one day a trip to the famous Erewan waterfall in the morning, followed by a trip to Hellfire Pass and the museum and then catch the train back to Kanchanaburi to cross the famous bridge around sunset.
Hellfire Pass is also another name for Halfaya Pass in north Africa.

This area was one where Rommel helped solidify his reputation as a great military leader and perfected the use of 88's in desert warfare and demonstrated their diverse capabilities beyond AA guns.
I felt by placing minefields that force troops and vehicles to the road (one of Rommel's tactics) and creating a single point through which vehicles can pass and making the cliffs difficult for troops to move through would help accomplish this historical relationship.
I've seen a number of photographs of captured Matilda turrets mounted in a concrete bunker that were used along the pass to supplement Rommel's 88 emplacements.

Thus Sollum, Halfaya Pass, and Fort Cappuzzo were names for people--the names were taken from the GDW game Operation Crusader and are locations in Egypt near the Libyan border.
Halfaya Pass became a fictional character with her own identity (actually several) and has been a major character in my writing since then.
Sollum's and Halfaya's names under this system, "mafi" and "kaho", both appear in the story, as do the names of some other women in one section.

Rommel took the withdraw of the 2nd and 6th RTR as a sign that the British left flank was crumbling and on the night of 16th June, he concentrated both the German 15th Panzer and 5th Light Divisions and struck hard at the left flank on the 7th Armoured Division.
The attack smashed straight through the Divisions lines, with the Germans heading for the crux of the battle at Halfaya Pass, but their advance was delayed for a while by the depleted 4th Armoured Brigade.

I never felt I had the ability to force Halfaya Pass (Tobruk had 5 units inside and could break out and attack my Italians with little effort) so historical strategy seems difficult to recreate.
