However, both of these games have their origins in varieties of football played in the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century, and American football is directly descended from rugby football, usually known simply as "Rugby".
The minor Arena Football League (1987-present) plays an indoor adaptation of American football, at a faster pace, on a smaller field with no built-in sidelines -- the edges of the grid are coincident with padded walls similar to those found in a baseball outfield.
Prior to each play from scrimmage, the two teams line up on opposite sides of a line of scrimmage, which is defined by the spot of the ball from the previous play.

an offensive play predicated upon misdirection in which the quarterback pretends to hand the ball to another player, and then carries the ball in the opposite direction of the supposed ballcarrier with the intent of either passing or running (sometimes the quarterback has the option of doing either).
an offensive play in which a ballcarrier going toward one side of the field hands or tosses the ball to a teammate who is running in the opposite direction (if the second ballcarrier is an end, it is an "end around").
The play is used when a team needs a very short gain to reach either the goal line or the line to gain.

 Offense - Overview
A third option is the Double Reverse (DV), which is the reverse play with a second handoff, the wide receiver running to the weakside handing the ball off to a second wide receiver running to the strongside.
This is the riskiest play of all, but if the defence is caught pursuing the play to the weakside the extra blockers to the strongside (from the initial misdirection) may lead to a large gain.
The Option Screen (OS) is a more complicated option play where the QB has the choice of throwing deep to a receiver downfield (the OS play) or dumping off to a back in the flat with a screen of blockers (the DC play).

History of Pro Football in Buffalo
The key play was the power sweep, which later became known as the "Lombardi sweep" or "Packer sweep," because it became famous after Lombardi took over as head coach of the Green Bay Packers and guided them to five NFL championships.
As the diagrams show, there were only two really important differences: The halfback had to receive a handoff from the quarterback, rather than taking a direct snap from center as the single-wing tailback; and both guards pulled to lead the blocking, rather than the on-side guard and the quarterback.
Halfback Paul Hornung, who had been a split-T quarterback at Notre Dame, was ideal for running the sweep and the halfback option.
