A halibut is a type of flatfish from the family of the righteye flounders (Pleuronectidae).
Halibut can be found at depths as shallow as a few metres to hundreds of metres deep, and although they spend most of their time near the bottom, halibut will move up in the water column to feed.
The commercial halibut fishery in the North Pacific dates to the late 19th century and today is one the largest and most lucrative fisheries in the region.

USS Halibut (SSGN/SSN-587), a unique guided missile submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the halibut, a large species of flatfish found on both sides of the Atlantic.
In February 1965 Halibut entered Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for a major overhaul, and on 15 August she was redesignated an attack submarine and given the hull classification symbol SSN-587.
She was mothballed to Key Port/Bangor, WA in 1976 and subsequently stricken on 30 April 1986 and disposed of by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA submarine recycling on 09 September 1994.

 Atlantic halibut
Halibut of 500 to 600 pounds are rumored almost every year, but the next largest of which we have definite knowledge was one of about 450 pounds caught on a hand line in the deep water between Browns and Georges Banks in 1908 by W. Clapp.
Halibut caught in shallow water are very active, usually starting off at great speed when they are hauled up from the bottom, often spinning the dory around in their attempts to escape.
Halibut held out better in the northeastern corner of the Gulf where there was not as ready a market for them as there was in Boston; Perley wrote of them as plentiful enough to be a plague to the local fishermen off Brier Island as recently as 1852.

This area has traditionally had nice halibut in the 150# range pulled from it this time of the year and can be fished with with smaller boats with less fuel capacity that required if you plan on hitting some of the "outside" spots.
Farther south there is a halibut closure northwest of LaPush, it is shaped like a big C with the center open for halibut fishing.
There are some halibut sanctuary closure areas off the coast, (both Canadian and US) so it may be beneficial to use your GPS and chart plotter to locate the corners of these closures.
