The Union Bank of Halifax was granted a charter by the government of Canada in 1856 and established its head office at the corner of Hollis and Prince Streets in the port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The driving force behind the bank, and its first chairman, was Halifax businessman and former mayor, William Machin Stairs (1789-1865).
The Union Bank developed a strong regional branch network as well as offices in Trinidad and Puerto Rico that served the bank's clients with shipping and trading interests throughout the Caribbean.

Halifax said pretax profits fell to £839 million in the six months, after a charge of £21 million for the merger, from £885 million last year, in line with expectations.

The Halifax has been forced to offer a grovelling apology to small businesses in the UK after revelations by the Sun newspaper suggested it was less than keen to have them as customers.
He acknowledged that the bank has "got a problem on occasion with heavy cash handling", but insisted that this was the bank's problem, not its customers' problem.
Business banking will be on offer from about 100 Halifax branches by the end of this year and the bank will not be excluding those listed on the flip chart, he explained.

400 students from halifax universities and high schools performed a peaceful sit-in at the Atlantic Provinces Headquarters branch of the Royal Bank in Halifax after a 2000+ strong march to the legislature demanding a tuition freeze and roll-backs.
The understanding was that once student representatives met with bank executives, students occupying the bank would leave, or otherwise be arrested.
The bank representatives were unable to make a public announcement on behalf of the financial institution as a whole due to liability issues.

The first is only known to yourselves, as it is a result of you failing to arrange the agreed transfer of my old current account to you in the 7 weeks the account was open.
I believe it is common practice in banking for customers to receive £25 in respect of a mistake being made in connection with their account.

After dealing with 3 other major banks in the last fifteen years I can honestly say that Halifax bank of Scotland are by far the worst.
The bank of Scotland used to be a reasonable bank to deal with but since their merger with the Halifax, customer services levels have plummeted.
After a few months working for the halifax i decided i would switch my current account from HSBC as it would be easyier for me as shortly i would be getting a personal loan hopefully from the halifax and i would be able to have the loan paid straight into my account.
