The Halifax bank (then Halifax plc) was created in the mid-1990s when the Halifax Building Society was demutualised and shares were sold on the London Stock Exchange.
It was the largest mutual building society, and the Halifax remained one of Britain's major financial institutions, with the largest share of the mortgage market.
In the summer of 2001 it was agreed to merge the Halifax with the Bank of Scotland to form HBOS plc (Halifax Bank of Scotland), which is one of the largest commercial banks in Britain.

At Halifax Car Insurance we guarantee you'll get a policy that suits you and your pocket..." The complainant objected that the advertisement was misleading because the advertisers quoted £2,717 to insure his car whereas a local insurer quoted £761.
The complainants, who transferred a balance into the advertisers' credit card account but found that subsequent repayments they made against purchases were deducted firstly from that balance and the amount of their promotional free credit correspondingly reduced or eliminated, objected that the promotion was misleading.
The Advertising Standards Authority upheld the complaint and concluded that the comparison was not clear and fair and asked the advertisers not to repeat the claim unless they held documentary evidence to prove it and had ensured that the elements of the comparison were not selected in a way that gave them an artificial advantage.

 Halifax Bank Loan
The Halifax Bank loan wins on two counts: firstly homeowners get loan deals that are closer in rate to mortgages; even if you were never a Halifax customer you can benefit from 6.0% and similar deals.
There's a good reason for the breadth of choice- Halifax, like Abbey National, is a building society that became a bank; they're used to lending money.
Where Halifax really goes to town is in secured lending- this is a loan based on having the funds guaranteed against your house.

Perhaps, this scenario illustrates the difference between Nationwide, a building society putting its members first, as opposed to the Halifax plc bank whose primary responsibility is to shareholders.
