Halifax Regional Council is the governing body for the Halifax Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia.
In April 1996 the councils for the City of Halifax, City of Dartmouth, Town of Bedford, and Halifax County were amalgamated into the Halifax Regional Municipality.
The Halifax Regional Council consists of twenty-three councillors and one mayor.

Opponents to the Stones concert will be approaching Halifax Regional council and Mayor Peter Kelly to demand a plebiscite on whether or not the taxpayers are ready yet again to fund and support yet another venture that in all likelihood will end up way too expensive for the simple folk of this province.

Halifax regional council will begin a series of secret meetings today on the city's $465.3-million sewage treatment plant contract with a private consortium.
Kelly said once council has had an opportunity to go through the contract and ask questions, the document will be made public and debated at an open meeting before anything is signed.
Last October, council agreed to enter into contract negotiations with the Halifax Regional Environmental Partnership for three plants to treat the raw sewage now flowing into Halifax Harbour.

Halifax's ban on residential pesticides and herbicides will be phased in over the next four years.
Halifax Regional Municipality won't use yard police or random grass testing to enforce its new lawn-chemical bylaw, a senior staffer said Wednesday.

Bylaw supporters had flocked to Halifax City Hall during past months to tell council it should err on the side of caution because of health concerns and eventually outlaw residential pesticide use.
Lawn-care industry representatives had asked council to establish a mandatory notification system, in which neighbours would be warned in advance of any spraying.
Council had asked the province for permission to regulate chemical spraying and in April 1999 received clearance to do so under the Municipal Government Act.

The Halifax Regional Municipality is one of the newest municipalities in the province, in terms of date of incorporation, therefore most of its history relates to the issues relating to municipal amalgamation.
The Halifax Regional Municipality has a well-developed network of public and private schools, providing instruction from primary to grade 12; 150 public schools are administered by the Halifax Regional School Board as well as 3 public schools administered by the Conseil Scolaire Acadien Provincial, whereas the 14 private schools are operated independently.
Halifax is a sister city of Halifax, England, Hakodate, Japan (1982), and Norfolk, Virginia (April 27, 2006).

 Halifax goes slow on pesticide ban
Halifax regional council decided Tuesday to proceed with a phased-in pesticide ban, which city staff warned will be virtually unenforceable.
Instead council will begin debate at the end of May on a bylaw to gradually phase out chemical pesticides over four years.
In the end, council decided that if there is going to be a ban on pesticides in the municipality then it will come in gradually.

Eva Curry, with the Halifax Coalition Against Poverty, said many neighbourhoods in Halifax Regional Municipality are marred by substandard rental properties because of inadequate penalties for landlords who ignore bylaws and cleanup orders.

Last month, Halifax Regional Council pulled out of a deal with a private consortium formed to curb the sewage pollution that has long soiled Halifax Harbour.
On the surface, Halifax's renunciation of its sewage agreement reflected irreconcilable differences over who should bear responsibility for the quality of the effluent from three proposed sewage treatment plants.
In the five years since Halifax initiated competition for its sewage treatment project, the city lost a reform-minded mayor and his chief administrative officer, who were both committed to a private-sector solution to the city's sewage woes.
