  Historic Halifax, North Carolina
Halifax was founded in 1760 as the seat of Halifax County.
Halifax achieved its greatest fame during the American Revolution, though for nearly sixty years afterward it continued to prosper, as wealth from the successful plantation system, political power, and a social gentry combined to bring a "golden age" to the town and valley.
Later called the "Halifax Resolves," the last paragraph of this report read in part: "Resolved, that the delegates for this Colony in the Continental Congress be empowered to concur with the delegates of the other Colonies in declaring independency...." It was the first official provincial action for independence in all the colonies.

In the early part of the 19th century the rich soil along the Dan River produced a wealth of tobacco, which was the main export crop from America to Europe.
Kenneth Cook, the late historian, described River Road as "being that portion of Highway 659, a little more than 16 1/2 miles in length, from Osborne's Corner to Cedar View near the Pittsylvania County line." It is so named because for more than half its length it follows the Dan River.

As an impassable barrier to the migration of Atlantic salmon and all native, migratory fish to their historic habitat in the Sebasticook River drainage, the fate of the Fort Halifax Dam is of critical importance to Friends of the Kennebec Salmon.
The fish pump was installed strictly as a temporary device to capture the minimum number of alewives necessary to maintain a population of the species in the Sebasticook River until permanent fish passage is constructed by deadlines approved by the Commission and all parties to the 1998 Kennebec River Settlement Accord.
And in 1997, the Commission itself ordered a substantial reduction in generation at the Fort Halifax dam by requiring year-round minimum flows and increased flows during the period migratory fish are seeking passage at the dam.
