In that year a first railway bridge was completed by the Intercolonial Railway from Halifax to Dartmouth, across the Narrows of Halifax Harbour.
In Fall 1911 the Dominion Government through the ICR purchased the Halifax and Eastern Railway plans and all rights.
There were many stations along the route with larger stations located at Dartmouth, Musquodoboit Harbour (which now houses the Musquodoboit Harbour Railway museum), Middle Musquodoboit and Upper Musquodoboit.

 History of Nova Scotia, Jan 1940 - Dec 1949
Revenue freight loaded at railway stations in Nova Scotia and received from foreign connections during December 1945 was 484,188 tons, according to the monthly report of railway traffic issued by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics.
Railway officials accompanying the train over the South Shore railway were Master Mechanic J.A. Fraser of Halifax, Trainmaster G.O. Baker, and Roadmasters S.J. Cook and J.E. Kelly of Bridgewater.
The train is standing in Halifax at the South Terminal, Union Station, on a siding on the east side of the station.

In 1901 enterprising businessmen, William Mackenzie and Donald Mann, began construction of the Halifax and Southwestern Railway, linking Halifax and Yarmouth.
In 1910 the Halifax and Southwestern Railway transported more than 200,000 people.
Sadly, with the abandonment of the line, the old train station was demolished on March 26th, 1977.

The Intercolonial Railway opened its North Street Station in Halifax; it was the main passenger station for Halifax until December 1917.
Today (2000) the Julian Calendar is still running, and is still widely used used for certain religious purposes, but — as far as I know — it is not used anywhere for any civil purposes (such as dating legal documents, or scheduling the operations of businesses, government departments, transportation, radio or television stations, etc.).
Today (July 2000) this railway track is still in use by ten trains a week in winter — twelve in summer, with the once-a-week round trip of the VIA passenger train — as the main line, between New Glasgow through Antigonish to Havre Boucher, of the Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway.

Another correspondent, Jacob Randall, of Kingston Station, near the western border of Kings County, states that this father kept what was called a tavern on the main road at Lower Aylesford one-half mile west of Kingston station.
There was no railway or steam navigation to assist the newspapers except perhaps in local areas for a short time.
Randall corroborates other statements that the average time from Halifax to Victoria Beach was 8 hours, or 18 miles an hour [about 29 km/h], when the roads were good.

St John is an important station of the Intercolonial, Canadian Pacific, and New Brunswick Southern railways, and shares with Halifax the honor of being the chief winter port of the Dominion, the harbour being deep, sheltered and free from ice.
