Family text for Haliplidae   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The phylogenetic analysis of the genera of Haliplidae presented by Beutel and Ruhnau (1990) showed that Peltodytes is monophyletic, and a sister-group of the remaining haliplid genera.
In spite of the thoroughness of their work, Beutel and Ruhnau considered their study as a first step toward future reorganization of the family (larval studies especially needed), and did not propose synonymies, elevate subgenera, or propose names for organizational units between family and species.
In the interest of maintaining stability until these matters are resolved, this checklist retains the traditional division of the Haliplidae into five genera.

Gyrinidae and Haliplidae (=Trachypachidae, Dytiscoidea, Caraboidea) is supported by several apomorphic features of larvae: cephalic egg bursters are present (Arndt 1993), the maxillary groove is completely reduced, M. tentoriolacinialis is attached to the mesal stipital base.
The monophyly of Haliplidae is supported by several striking autapomorphies (e.g.

Both larvae and adults of six beetle families are aquatic, Dytiscidae (predaceous diving beetles), Elmidae (riffle beetles), Gyrinidae (whirligig beetles), Haliplidae (crawling water beetles), Hydrophilidae (water scavenger beetles), and Noteridae (burrowing water beetles).
In the primitive Hydrobiidae, the Haliplidae, one genus of Dytiscidae, and the Gyrinidae, the larvae have tracheal gills.
The Haliplidae (crawling water beetles) are very small beetles living mainly in ponds and the littoral region of lakes.

All Haliplidae have elytron (wing covers) on their backs.
Haliplidae gain oxygen from the surface air and are able to stay under water because they maintain air bubbles that can supply enough oxygen.

The beetle is a member of an uncommon genus in the Family Haliplidae and Order Coleoptera.
The beetles are thought to live longer than one year and to overwinter as larvae in the dense aquatic vegetation at the stream's edge (Wilsmann and Strand 1990).
Compared to other Haliplidae, the adults are strong swimmers and they obtain oxygen by swimming to the surface or crawling to the water line at the edge of the stream.
