Within the context of the development of the Nunavut Parks Program, the Department of Environment, Parks and Tourism Division is studying the feasibility of developing an attraction(s) in the community of Coral Harbour as the focus for protecting and preserving the area's natural and cultural heritage, and enhancing opportunities for recreation, tourism and economic development.

While most communities in Nunavut grew around trading posts, whaling stations or seasonal hunting and fishing camps, Hall Beach was created instantly when a Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line site was built here in 1957 to help monitor Canadian air space in the Far North.
(Sanirajak, meaning "one that is along the coast" in Inuktitut, refers to the broad region encompassing Hall Beach.) Yet despite the rapid changes that have occurred since those years, Hall Beach remains one of the most traditional communities in Nunavut.
Hall Beach is one of the few places in Canada where walruses are still numerous, and walrus hunting is a common activity between July and September.

Bert Dean, Nunavut Tunngavik’s director of wildlife in Rankin Inlet, said regional wildlife organizations will hold a teleconference on Thursday to make a final decision about the hunt.
The Wildlife Policy Advisory Committee (WPAC), a group made up of representatives of all wildlife organizations in Nunavut, was supposed to talk about it last week, but that meeting was delayed until June 20.
Abraham Qaunnaq, the chairperson of the Hall Beach Hunters and Trappers Association, declined to be interviewed, but the secretary-manager, Jason Mikki, said that Hall Beach hunters are interested in the bowhead hunt.

Dan Pike, wildlife director for the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB), which participated in the survey, said the number of Peary caribou from Bathurst Inlet to Melville and Prince Patrick Islands, is estimated to be a mere 1,100.
