The Richmond Review, Book Review, Hall Caine by Vivien Allen
Hall Caine (1835-1931) was a highly successful writer of sensational romances whose work is now generally forgotten and who is remembered, if at all, largely for his reminiscences of Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
Caine made much of his origins in the Isle of Man, and his novels rely heavily on offering their readers exotic or peripheral settings, whether in Man, Egypt or Iceland.
The complications of Caine, who had supported the raising of the age of consent to 16 but married a girl whom he was initially accused of 'ruining' when she was 13, his probable homosexuality, excessive self-advertisement, active political life and sartorial eccentricity are all noted only to be played down.

Hall Caine's early 'married' life was unconventional, whilst staying in London in 1882 with a bachelor friend, the two had their evening meals brought in from a nearby coffee shop.
Whilst he could legally marry her, Caine felt she was too young (and very likely he was not in the mood to marry) but did offer to pay for her education (yet another theme that landed up in his novels).
Like Hall Caine, who was small at 5'3", Mary too was small, pretty and with a charming voice; many of his friends assumed that he too had bowed to pressure and married her.
