Johnson's ambitions and hopes for the future of his heirs lay with the Crown, but his human sympathies, his love for his neighbors, red and white, which had always governed his conduct, drew him in the other direction.
When Johnson was a bachelor in his early twenties and in need of a housekeeper for his frontier home, he took Catherine Weissenberg, a young refugee from the Palatinate, who, like so many others, was bound to service for a few years for her passage to the land of promise.
Johnson Hall was confiscated in 1779 by the State of New York as Loyalist property and sold at auction.

Johnson Hall houses 160 students in a variety of room configurations, and is located in the Fuller Quadrangle along Florence Street on the north side of campus, and is only a minute walk from the the Kneller Athletic Center, the Goddard Library, Estabrook Hall, the Little Center, and the Wright, Dodd, and Sanford Residence Halls.
Johnson Hall is also within a quick walk of the campus center, including the Higgins University Center, Atwood Hall, Jonas Clark Hall, Jefferson Hall, and the Bullock Residence Halls.
Johnson Hall features shared common space, including a large social lounge on the basement level, laundry facilities, and a variety of kitchens, semi-private, and private bathrooms.

Johnson is staying on in Budapest to tweak the acoustic for for the world's loudest orchestras.
The hall could be built in three years, as distinct from the twenty it took to erect the Barbican, and the further twenty that the RFH has spent on its refurbishment debate.

The heel-less form of this pipe bowl from Johnson Hall strongly suggests that it was made in Bristol for American consumption and that the maker was consequently Thomas Dennis, who was apprenticed to Robert Tippet in 1723, became a freeman in 1734, and was still active in 1781.
The Johnson Hall piece dates probably, then, to around the middle of the 19th century, the date for the stratum in which it was found.
