Dandenong railway station was first opened in 1877 as one of the original stations on the Melbourne-Sale railway line.
The station underwent a massive redevelopment in the 1990s, and is also the junction for the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines.

Melbourne historians consider this to be a descriptive name, taken from the name of a cottage occupied by a Captain Bunbury, but it is nevertheless interesting to note that an early name for this area was Scotchman's Hill.
These Melbourne suburbs derive their names from that of an earlier township (now the suburb of Malvern East) which had been privately surveyed in 1853 and which was named Waverley by its owner after the Sir Walter Scott novels.
The Melbourne suburb was named for Benjamin Baxter, Clerk to the Bench of Magistrates in Melbourne in 1838 and a landowner in the area.

He was secretary to the first public meeting held in Melbourne, on 1 June, and in October Lonsdale (q.v.) appointed him medical officer at a salary of £200 a year.
However, in 1887 he was elected president of the Melbourne trades hall and two years later was returned to the legislative assembly for Richmond, and held this seat until he resigned in November 1903 to enter federal politics.
