In ancient Greece the orchestra was the space between the auditorium and the proscenium (or stage), in which were stationed the chorus and the instrumentalists.
The unusual aspect of the orchestra was that, believing that in the ideal Marxist state all men are equal, its members felt that there was no need to be led by the dictatorial baton of a conductor; instead they were led by a committee.
In some theaters, the orchestra is the area of seats directly in front of the stage (called "primafila" or "platea"); the term more properly applies to the place in a theatre, or concert hall set apart for the musicians.

I say 'very nearly' because Elder's Halle Orchestra play with exceptional delicacy and richness; Elder's musical directorship of the Halle is obviously bearing splendid fruit.
In 'Venus' the RSNO's violins are just a shade glassier than the Halle's, but the climax of 'Saturn' is no less powerful and I very much liked the bright, sharp, almost raucous colours of 'Uranus'.
The RSNO's performance on 'Mars' and 'Venus' is also much more wilful than that of the Halle, and they match up well to each other on the more meditative movements and sequences too.
