 Violent Femmes Biography : Oldies.com
Violent Femmes included a number of songs which would be rapidly adopted as alternative rock classics, including "Blister In The Sun", "Kiss Off", "Add It Up", "Gone Daddy Gone" and "Good Feeling".
Hallowed Ground followed a year later, a more full-bodied work that lacked the shambolic nature of their debut.
There was then a hiatus in Violent Femmes' activities while Gordon Gano appeared with his side-project, the gospel-influenced Mercy Seat, and multi-instrumentalist Ritchie recorded two solo sets for the SST Records label.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Violent Femmes - 1984 - Hallowed Ground Music Review
But on Hallowed Ground, religion and hatred-of-religion are so closely entwined that it's hard to decode the sarcasm of a number like the bluegrass-gospel "Jesus Walking on the Water." It's pretty believable, and were it not for Gano's nasal sneer, it would be difficult to tell it apart from a Carter Family recording.
Hallowed Ground wraps up with a jolly, celebratory ditty called "It's Gonna Rain"—as happy and demented an F.U. to the system as "They're Coming to Take Me Away." There's ark imagery, and more 40-days-and-40-nights gobbledygook, but it's not at all as sinister as the rest of the album.
The Violent Femmes may hail from Wisconsin, but this death trip is a hot, humid ride through the hell of the Bible Belt.

Hallowed Ground - Violent Femmes - Song Listings
After the surprise success of their landmark debut, Violent Femmes could have just released another collection of teen-rage punk songs disguised as folk, and coasted into the modern rock spotlight alongside contemporaries like the Modern Lovers and Talking Heads.
Gano, the son of a Baptist minister, may wear his faith like a badge of honor, but it's a badge, not a shield, and what keeps the songs so volatile is the fact that they're filtered through the eyes, ears, heart, and loins of a teenager.
The Femmes are nothing if not true to themselves, and Hallowed Ground is a testament to their tenacity, courage, and sheer obliviousness to industry ogling.

With 1984's Hallowed Ground, Gano's lyrics began to reflect his devout Baptist upbringing, while the Femmes' music approached more traditional folk and country structures.
After the record's release, the Femmes temporarily disbanded: Gano recorded a self-titled 1987 album with his gospel side project the Mercy Seat, while Ritchie issued a series of solo LPs including 1987's The Blend and 1989's Sonic Temple and Court of Babylon for SST.

One of the most distinctive records of the early alternative movement and an enduring cult classic, Violent Femmes weds the geeky, child-man persona of Jonathan Richman and the tense, jittery, hyperactive feel of new wave in an unlikely context: raw, amateurish acoustic folk-rock.
Still, the main reason Violent Femmes became the preferred soundtrack for the lives of many an angst-ridden teenager is lead singer and songwriter Gordon Gano.
In 1983, the Violent Femmes' first recording, and certainly their most prolific, had the underground world in an uproar, becoming the first album to ever reach platnum status without once making the Top 100 charts.

While "Violent Femmes" was written about typical teenage guy/girl relationships, "Hallowed Ground" concentrates on Gano’s love/hate relationship with religion.

Time off seems to have paid dividends for the Violent Femmes, though, with Freak Magnet, the band's first studio record in five years, delivering a strong showing, eclipsing much of the band's latter-day albums in both depth and quality.
As always, the Femmes, find themselves slightly off kilter with this album, though this time it's with that sense of fun and longing the band is at its best with rather than the off-balance shots at expanding their sound that landed them on shaky ground.
The Femmes may be long past their wild and young days, though they still manage to have fun on this album.
