 Halloween (1978)
When the film was aired in 1981 on commercial network television (available in a 1999 re-release DVD version), director Carpenter was obliged to shoot about 12 minutes of additional footage to replace the gory and violent scenes, due to the numerous cuts made.
Throughout the manipulative, morbid film, the suspenseful stalkings and killings are seen from the subjective vantage point of the killer's or 'peeping tom's' eyes, a few times while looking through a mask.
Almost every scene is filmed with a constantly-moving camera (the Steadicam variety) to make the audience feel disordered, totally insecure, unsettled and paranoid, believing that every ominous corner, shadow, noise, or space is potentially life-threatening or dangerous and that everyone will be a helpless victim of random violence.

 DVD Review - Halloween
It is a release that focuses on the film in the first place and adds interesting and rare material that will give viewers a better understanding for the importance of the movie itself.
The film has been completely restored from a newly found negative print that boasts better colors and less damage than the prints used for previous home video transfers.
No matter which stalker film you watch today, each and every one of them builds upon the recipe established by Carpenter’s film, although I do not want to diminish Tobe Hooper’s impact on the genre with his "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" from 1974 here.

Movie Info for Halloween II on MSN Movies
While John Carpenter's 1978 horror classic Halloween irrevocably changed the style of horror cinema with its simple but relentlessly tense story, it triggered more than a decade's worth of uninspired, exploitative knock-offs, and one could easily list Halloween II among these failures.
As with its predecessor, this film was written and produced by Carpenter and Debra Hill, but the terse style and unbearable suspense of the first film are missing, replaced by a more simplistic stalk-and-slash scenario.
Carpenter's active involvement in the Halloween franchise continued to dwindle steadily from one sequel to the next, getting scarcely a mention by the time producers Hill, Moustapha Akkad and Irwin Yablans revived the series in 1988 for three more sequels.

In late 1978, a small horror film opened in Bowling Green, Kentucky (before moving on to Chicago and New York City) that would change the face of the genre.
The ultimate success of the movie, however, encouraged other film makers to try their hand at this sort of enterprise, and it didn't take long for someone to decide that audiences wanted as many explicitly grisly scenes as the running length would allow.

DVDFILE.COM: Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers review
A box office hit when released in 1988, HALLOWEEN 4 marks the first Halloween film without the participation (in some capacity) of John Carpenter and Debra Hill, who changed the face of the independent film scene and resuscitated the horror genre with the original back in 1978.
Though many continue to like HALLOWEEN 4, and credit it with reviving the series after the moribund HALLOWEEN III (as the series would be revived again with last summer's HALLOWEEN H20), I have to admit to never warming much to the fourth installment of the Myers saga.
Aside from the trailer for Halloween 4 and the original, there are no other supplements on the disc.

Movies that proceeded Halloween had a piece or two of the puzzle, but in 1978, all the elements came together to form something that would become one of the most beloved sub-genres in horror film history… the slasher film!

However, the two prototypical films that launched the slasher cycle of the late 1970s and early 1980s were John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) and Sean S. Cunningham's Friday the 13th (1980), both of which spawned numerous sequels and even more imitators, including Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), which itself generated an enduring series.
The slasher film (also known simply as slashers) is a sub-genre of the horror film genre.
The films are often followed by multiple sequels which steadily decline in quality and fan interest.

A strong case could be made that John Carpenter's cult hit Halloween (1978) was a film that shaped the face of the modern horror film.

The film is further shot in by a plot that throws in an absurd spin that turns Michael Myers into some druidic avatar of evil incarnate.

Ziggy's Video Realm: Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween II (1981)
Halloween II picks up exactly where the first film leaves off, beginning with a replay of the final moments of the original Halloween (actually the same scenes filmed fresh for this movie rather than simply using the previous footage).
In terms of the gore factor, Halloween II is certainly bloodier than the first film (to the point where on character gets knocked unconscious after slipping in a massive pool of blood and hitting his head on the hard floor); but it's still not what I would consider a particularly visceral movie.
Halloween II completes the tale of Michael Myers' murderous return to Haddonfield on October 31, 1978, with both John Carpenter and Debra Hill returning to write the screenplay, assuring good continuity with the storyline.
