Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Halmahera rain forests (AA0106)
The eastern half of the island was part of an outer arc on the Philippines tectonic plate and consists of sedimentary and intrusive igneous rocks.
The most luxuriant rain forests occur in northwest Morotai and north Halmahera, as opposed to the south arm of Halmahera, which is in the rain shadow of north Halmahera and Bacan.
With nearly 80 percent of its original forest still intact, the Halmahera Rain Forests [AA0106] ecoregion is largely free of intense habitat conversion threats.

Of the four peninsulas of Halmahera the northern and the southern are reckoned to the sultanate of Ternate, the north-eastern and south-eastern to that of Tidore; the former having eleven, the latter three districts.
The distance between the extremities of the northern and southern peninsulas, measured along the curve of the west coast, is about 240 m.; and the total area of the island is 6700 sq.
It was circumnavigated by one of their vessels in 1525, and the general outline of the coasts is correctly given in their maps at a time when separate portions of Celebes, such as Macassar and Menado, are represented as distinct islands.

Halmahera is a region of Indonesia that for some reason has been very rarely visited by tourists never mind divers.
The last diving liveaboard I know of that came through this region was back in 1998 with a man I was to track down with sea charts to get a few pointers on where to and not to head for.
Many people talk about Halmahera with many different stories, I have heard talk about the region being heavily impacted by fish bombing which kills all surrounding reef leaving fields of nothing but broken coral rubble.
