The Covenant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The events of Halo 2 apparently contradict the novel in explicitly stating that the Covenant had not identified Earth as the Human homeworld.
In Halo, Hunters were outfitted with a parabolically firing Fuel Rod Gun on their right arm, but in Halo2, hunters used a powerful beam cannon that fired in a straight line and could fire constantly for several seconds.
As the Master Chief and UNSC discovered, the Halos were not built as religious icons; they are galactic weapons of mass destructive sterilization built by the Forerunners to contain a parasitic race known as The Flood.

The Ark is meant for a command and control (c2) station for all Halos in the galaxy, as established by 2401 Penitent Tangent.
Therefore, one could summize that the Ark should be immune to the effects of the Halos since it is a place of control and should not harm the intelligent beings that are controlling the devices aboard the Ark. Biblical referrences even state that the Ark is immune to the Flood..
It is revealed in Halo 2 that the Halos are weapons of last resort, used to destroy all life in the galaxy.

Orbital (space habitat) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Illustration of an orbital, taken from the popular video game Halo: Combat Evolved.
Vavatch, a non-Culture orbital seen in Consider Phlebas, had a circumference of fourteen million kilometres and a width of thirty-five thousand kilometres - significantly larger than the orbitals built by the Culture - and produced greater simulated gravity.
The computer game Halo: Combat Evolved is set on a structure similar to an orbital.

IGN Boards - Of the forerunners and the flood. (a closer look at the story of halos greatest mystery)
The halo's had a duel purpose: to contain and study the flood and to prevent them from spreading if they were to escape.
Also it is evident that they were looking for forerunner tech because in the history of battles with the covenant they have never dropped ground troops unless there were forerunner artifacts to capture.
Halo was designed to study and contain the Flood infection, which was unwittingly set loose by the Covenant.

Anyways, I was playing Halo and I started playing at "The Two Betrayals" and I noticed that when Cortana is informing the master chief of what he was about to do, she says, "The Forerunners" with an "s", as in plural.
Halo is supposed to wipe out all life in a radius or something(I forgot) light years, but that doesn't mean that it would destroy life on Halo.
Perhaps the last time Halo was set off, the Forerunner were forced to occupy Flood beings, as the rest of the Galaxy was "quite devoid of life", and this is why GS says that "their [Forerunner?] survival as a race was dependent on it" - meaning the enduring of the Flood.

Flood are not the Forerunners, thats the most stupid thing ive heard.
Covys take the Forerunner tec, and are not the Forerunners.
Well, why do you suppose they are inside halos jail cells, they must be forunner prisoners who evolved into flood and now they take revenge by destroying all organisms of forunner origin.

Given what has been said, the way they ended Halo 2 (it was a very convenient place to end it.), and how close the NextBox is to being released/announced, it's obvious that a Halo 3 is going to have to be in order.
Halo 3 NOT being a launch title, but replaced by something else - This is where my suggestions get a bit weird, but stay with me. Microsoft own two first class development teams, Bungie and Rare.
If humans really are forerunner descendants, or even a race that was considered important by the forerunner's, then we are a threat to the Prophet's rule.

 TheForerunner - Netninja Bee Wiki
The Forerunners, as one might deduce from the name, are an early race of beings in HaloMarathonHalo.
Little is known about them except that they apparently built Halo, Halo's Monitor (343 Guilty Spark), and the Sentinels.
Each Halo only kills organisms of sufficient size and cognitive ability (quoting 343 GS) within 25,000 light years (roughly 1/4 of the galaxy).

Halo 1 says Forerunner = Humans. - Xbox Addict Asylum
I wouldn't put it past the forerunner that they made humans as reclaimers (all humans are reclaimers thanks to the insight from 2401) to activate the rings in case the Flood got out of hand.
The forerunner don't necessarily have to be dead, assuming that Earth was the 'ark' referred to in the end, and as an ark (following the biblical themes stuck in the game), housed what few forerunners 'managed to survive,' as the Oracle put it, and survived long enough to reclaim what they had.
It would be interesting if indeed humans were in fact descendants of the Forerunners, and if the Earth was where they retreated to after activiting the rings at some time in the past.

Those outposts could be the equivalent of the Halo's that we know, and the Covenant could have plundered lost and forgotten Forerunner tech from them.
It's similar because it IS from the Forerunner.
In Halo, I think that the Flood were created for this same purpose.

I'm currently reading Halo: The Flood (I'm just up to the Covvie ambush of the convoy from the Autumn), and I'm wondering why it is that the MC was able to KNOW which button to push to activate the light bridge.
If humans are related to the Forerunners (I agree with those that say they are), then it's possible that we know instinctively how to use their technology.
I think the book said that either the Prophets or Elites (I'm not sure which) evolved on a planet that was held by the Forerunners, and the implication was that they were still there for awhile after they became sentient.

 Halo mmorpg?(article) - Tech Watch
Whilst a Game Informer article on a new Halo game, titled 'Halo: Forerunner', was dismissed as an April Fool's Day gag by Bungie staffers on the official forums, Game Informer's latest issue alleges that the rumours were in fact based on insider facts, and not related to a hastily spliced together 1st of April prank.
The article in question suggested that Halo: Forerunner would include 'huge persistent worlds' and would be built using a modified version of the Halo 2 engine.
A co-op mode for four players was also mooted and whilst as a rounded concept these hints hardly offer much in the way of factual nourishment, it is certainly plausible that Bungie are considering ways in which to expand the series.

I'm guessing the higher echelons of their prophets realize we're descendants of the Forerunners, and are worried we'd displace them as leaders somehow.
It would be bitter irony that humans are the descendants and rightful heirs of the Forerunner and their tech and the Covenant merely horde it.
Thus Halo is born and the forunner tech is just an interesting twist.

A couple of days ago, there was a rumor floating around from Game Informer Magazine that Halo 3 wouldn’t be called Halo 3, but Forerunner, and that it might be a side story and that Halo 4 would be the final game with Master Cheif.
The battle will probably be for Earth and the player can pick a side and battle in huge battles - 100+ people trying to take over a base and 100+ people trying to hold the base.
Halo Online will be as big as World of Warcraft and will be Microsoft’s first “billion dollar game.” Don’t be surprised if this game gets 10 million subscribers paying $10-15 a month within the first three years.
