HowStuffWorks "The Artificial Intelligence of Halo 2"
Each character is written to do certain things, but despite their individual roles, they all function in the same way.
This is a key point in how the Halo AI works: Because the characters are forced to perceive the world around them, they are, in many ways, limited like the player by their senses -- in their overall awareness of what is going on around them.
But the AI would keep a memory of that character and the fact that they last saw her there, and when she left, she was moving in that direction.

 Halo 3 Review
This chapter in the Halo history reaches its climax as Cortana, Spartan's ethereal female companion, is held captive by the Flood's intelligent embodiment, Gravemind.
Halo 3 quite certainly uses a modified version of the Halo 2(1?) code, and although it carries many technological improvements, one cannot escape the feeling that the programmers have just about squeezed the last drop out of a code that's getting a little long in the tooth.
Halo 3 was injected with more soul and larger-than-life scenes than either of the two previous games.

Halo 2 offers a larger array of vehicles to choose from, such as the Ghost, Spectre, Banshee, Wraith, Scorpion Tank, Warthog and advanced maneuvering abilities, such as boarding (hijacking) any vehicle and boosting (for Covenant Vehicles only), features that were not offered in Halo: Combat Evolved.
It is also revealed that the Covenant's interest in Halo lies in the belief that the activation of Halo would bring about the "Great Journey", which would cleanse the universe of lesser lifeforms (including the Flood) while providing salvation for the Covenant.

In Halo 3, players will also be able pick such rudimentary options as whether music tracks on their HDD will play in the background, whether they want infinite grenades and whether all starting primary and secondary weapons as well as the heavy and light vehicles are randomly determined each respawn.
The playable characters being considered include Hunters (bigger targets, slower except when charging someone without a weapon, but they have more life, are much faster and have more varied melee attacks) and the flying Drones found in the first level of Halo 2 (weaker but faster and possessing the ability to fly limited distances).
Halo is still fully designed to be an FPS first and foremost and you will be able to play through the entire game without once having to try the RTS aspect of the game if you so desire.

 Halo 2 - GameCritics.com
Though Halo 2 undoubtedly deserves high praise for expanding on the excellent concepts that made the original such a unique experience, it also deserves its fair share of criticism, not only for past mistakes that have resurfaced, but also for its failure to take bolder steps with the franchise.
The characters are full of personality on the battlefield, and the combination of scripted lines and on-the-fly one-liners makes for an engaging and often humorous experience.
Despite some relatively minor flaws, Halo 2 continues the saga with a fine campaign and a multiplayer game that is sure to continue to breathe life into the game for the foreseeable future.
