Halo: Combat Evolved - Halopedia - A Wikia wiki
Halo players, on the other hand, have a more-or-less permanent buffer of health at their disposal (assuming they manage to find time to regenerate the shield), making it less of a disaster to take hits in combat.
The "Halo" in the title refers to an enormous artificial space habitat similar to a Culture Orbital discovered by the warship Pillar of Autumn, which the central character, Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, is aboard.

Halo is the game that propelled the Xbox game system from a Microsoft pipedream to a real contender in the battle of the game consoles.
Halo takes place in the future, where humans are fighting a losing battle against the technologically superior "covenant," a group of alien beings who are driven by radical religious beliefs to destroy all humans.
It would seem that while the covenant was attempting to activate halo for their own purposes, they inadvertently released "the flood," a vicious alien life-form that survives only by taking over the body of an organic host and then spreading to the next victim.

Action Vault - Halo: Combat Evolved Review
Initially unveiled in the summer of 1999 as a project for the PC and Mac, Bungie Studios' Halo: Combat Evolved eventually came to fruition in November of 2001 when it made its debut on a third platform, Microsoft's Xbox console, to near universal acclaim.
Playing out on 19 different maps, Halo's multiplayer component comprises several free for all and team-oriented modes, and further diversifying the gameplay, there are a handful of variants upon each of those.
Halo's other multiplayer modes encompass King of the Hill and Capture the Flag-style play, and on the whole, the online segment is quite engrossing, having already consumed far more time than was needed to complete the single-player campaign.

Review - Halo: Combat Evolved // PC /// Eurogamer
Where its very vocal detractors appear to take issue with Halo is the repetition; after a relatively short while it's easy to see that the game really is "30 seconds of fun, repeated over and over" as Bungie admitted at X03 last month.
The deadly close combat Flamethrower, and the Fuel Rod gun, which is an energy weapon style rocket launcher style, and potentially even more devastating, allowing the player to fire over obstacles.
Halo's still a classic, it's aged pretty well, the AI's still impressive, but the absence of co-op is a bitter blow, and the limited 16 player multiplayer support is annoying.

Halo: Combat Evolved for PC Review - PC Halo: Combat Evolved Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Halo for the Xbox has gone on to sell more than 3 million copies worldwide--which isn't proof of the game's superior quality, but certainly is evidence of it.
Halo is famous for integrating powerful, fun-to-drive vehicles with the on-foot action, and this is what distinguishes its multiplayer component from that of other shooters, though some other PC shooters have also integrated vehicles more or less successfully since the original release of Halo.
Halo is no exception, and it easily features one of the best stories to date in a first-person shooter, though that's not necessarily saying much.

Halo is the name given to a ringworld, and you come upon it as the member of a human spacecraft locked in battle with a much larger alien force called the Covenant.
Halo truly does itself a disservice, because the dozen or so enemies in the game should be enough to keep the variety going, but killing a different alien in what is effectively the same room over and over again only increases the unending-game-in-hell feeling.
The one thing that Halo does do, that at least two years ago most FPS games did not, though more and more are now, is that you can drive and fly vehicles, both yours and your enemies.
