The Flood (Halo) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the event that the Flood was released, the Halos were designed to destroy all sentient life in the galaxy.
The Flood on Installation 0-4 were completely destroyed in Halo: Combat Evolved and in Halo 2 they returned with a vengeance with the ability to use vehicles and command starships which could take them anywhere in the galaxy.
The Flood is a fictional alien life form in the video games Halo and Halo 2.

The installation (Halo) was built specifically to study and contain the Flood - their (forerunner) survival as a race was dependant on it (the containment of the flood).
She had absorbed a tremendous volume of data from halos systems: eons' worth of records on halos engineering and maintenance, the xenobiology of the flood and every scrap of information on the mysterious "forerunners" the covenant revered so much.
As has been observed in the game and sent in to us here, the Halo was built by the Forerunners to contain and study the Flood, as well as fight it if it ever spreads.

Halo was designed to study and contain the Flood infection, which was unwittingly set loose by the Covenant.
Found on the fortress-world of Halo, the Flood are a group of parasitic life forms that will eventually consume everything with significant biomass in the universe.
The Flood's parasitic nature belies their intelligence, for the Flood can access the memories of any host it infects.

Not to mention the extreme contact he's had with the Flood throughout Halo, I wouldn't doubt his MJOLNIR armor is covered from head to toe with Flood spores.
It's puzzling how Cortana, with such a wealth of knowledge gained from the Halo (She must know all about how the Flood spreads), could allow the Master Chief to do such a thing.
I don't know where we'll be in any sequels....but it doesn't seem like we'll be playing as the Master Chief again unless Bungie has some way to explain for his resistance to the Flood.

sentinels are generally slow moving and flood usually run towards you or jump, so it can be effective against that.

Haloe : the Flood is actually the story of Halo "1" with all the gaps filled in, it says a lot about the game's story in all 3 books
in Halo 1, if u've read the books (Part 2: The Flood) (i dont remember clearly, actually) when the marines/ODST's setup a base on Halo they actually open something at the bottom of their base from where the flood come out.
In Halo 2, they were everywhere- the Sentinal Wall, the Threshold installation, and even in some quarantine zone surrounding the Library.

The Ark (Halo) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ark could then be seen as perhaps a bastion from the alien parasite The Flood and the destructive power of the Halo weapons, a place where the Forerunners perhaps placed those chosen to propagate the species or even genetic samples.
If the naming of the game's enemy, The Flood, is in reference to the biblical Flood, then the Ark may be a place that is safe from the Halos' firing when the Halos are activated.
In Halo 2 there are a number of possible hints that the Ark is in the vicinity of Earth, perhaps near New Mombasa (the city in the game's second level that is destroyed due to a slipspace rupture caused by The Prophet of Regret’s ship).

There could have been warring Forerunner nations (like we've got now), and one of them created the Flood to use against the rest, but it got way out of control, which is why they had the Halos for backup, and they made their planet (Earth) immune, but wiped out all the other Forerunners.
I was thinking more along the lines of like at the begining of the game, it shows way back when the Forerunners activated the rings for the first time to prevent the spreading of the flood.
I think we are the Forerunner, and Earth is somehow immune to the effects of Halo (maybe to ensure that something survived the last activation).

As the Master Chief and UNSC discovered, the Halos were not built as religious icons; they are galactic weapons of mass destructive sterilization built by the Forerunners to contain a parasitic race known as The Flood.
At the start of Halo 2 there are 3 supreme prophets, but during the game, the Master Chief assassinates the Prophet of Regret (the youngest) and the Prophet of Mercy (eldest) is infected and killed by the Flood, leaving only one supreme prophet, the Prophet of Truth.
A heretic group led by an Elite referred to only as the "heretic leader" briefly controlled a Forerunner station in the atmosphere of the gas giant planet of Threshold, the planet around which the first Halo in Halo: Combat Evolved orbits.

Not to take anything away from Master Chief, who is and always will be the hero of the Halo series, but some of the toughest, most challenging battles in the single-player story line of Halo® 2 belong to his Covenant counterpart, the Elite holy warrior known only the Arbiter.

The Monitor on Installation 04 was 343 Guilty Spark, when the Humans released the Flood on Halo he broke out the Sentinels and attempted to enlist the "Reclaimer" (Master Chief) into acquiring the index and bring it to Installation 04's control center thus activating Halos main weapon.
Monitors: On each Halo there is a Monitor, an incredibly intelligent A. roughly the equivalent to the UNSC's "smart" A.I.'s such as Cortana.
Sentinel Enforcers main weakness is if a soldier can get close enough and stick a couple of Plasma Grenades to its unshielded rear/underside then it can be damaged, to counter this Enforcers are almost always accompanied by regular more maneuverable Sentinels.

The Pulse would have killed all the defending Forerunner on the Halo's but it most likely stranded the Flood on the Halo installations as well, leaving them to be discovered by an unfortunate UNSC Navy Captain 100,000 years later.
So the only other logical choice was that they built the Halo system in advanced, along with the Ark. This is where my logic ends, and I tend to go out on a limb, But I think the Flood were developed as something akin to Resident Evil's T-virus.
If Halo 04 was any indication, the Forerunner weren't shy about building new installations in the same system as their older ones.

it seems logical that humans (Forerunners) ages ago encountered the Flood, and created the Halo in a last ditch effort to save themselves...and succeded, and only a pocket of humans were spared, on earth...the others constructed the Halo sacrificing themselves to stop the Flood.
They seem most persistent in their attempts to access restricted areas." It is assumed from this that GS knows that you are human, or thinks that the other humans on halo are forerunner.

Soooo, as MC escapes this first Flood encounter, (which is creepy as all hell and one of the best cinematic moments I've ever experienced in a game) he meets up with a small hovering AI known as 343-Guilty Spark, the caretaker and controller of Halo...

Halo Story Page Story Elements The Forerunner
Perhaps the last time Halo was set off, the Forerunner were forced to occupy Flood beings, as the rest of the Galaxy was "quite devoid of life", and this is why GS says that "their [Forerunner?] survival as a race was dependent on it" - meaning the enduring of the Flood.
Anyways, I was playing Halo and I started playing at "The Two Betrayals" and I noticed that when Cortana is informing the master chief of what he was about to do, she says, "The Forerunners" with an "s", as in plural.
Once again, this clues you into being forerunner, for it is unlikely that the monitor has been exposed to more races than those who have made it onto halo, and if he is only aware of two, and one is the covenant, then the other must be human/forerunner.

This Ark could be a reference to Noah's Ark, since activating it would destroy all life much like the Great Flood; interestingly, the purpose of the Halos is to stop the spread of a scourge that turns sentient beings into the "Flood", a horde of ravenous, zombie-like creatures.
In the video game Halo 2 the "Ark" is a secondary control system for the ringworlds (the "Halos") that are capable of killing all life in the galaxy.
