Halocarpus description   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The distinction from Podocarpus is reinforced by the absence of fusion between the integument and the epimatium in Halocarpus, as well as in the presence of the aril-like collar.
Halocarpus kirkii is the only species in the genus that definitely grows larger than a big shrub.
"Halocarpus is named for the white collar at the base of the carpidium, which is the most striking feature of the genus" (Quinn 1982).

Flora of New Zealand | Doing my Homework
Podocarpaceae are prominent and diverse, (Pole 1998), the podocarpaceae family in New Zealand is represented by eight genera, Podocarpus, Prumnopitiys, Dacrycarpus, Dacrydium, Phyllocladus, Monoao, Lepidothamnus and Halocarpus.
The evidence of spore, pollen, leaf and sometimes seed fossils in sedimentary rocks shows that conifer forests have been presents in New Zealand for a very long time, perhaps as long as 100 million years ago (Pole 1998).
This genus is restricted to New Zealand with two species, Halocarpus kirkii previously know as Dacrydium kirkii and H., New Zealand Native Trees, 1967.

McGlone & Moar--Dryland Holocene vegetation history
The adjacent hilly country supported a forest/scrub cover of Podocarpus hallii, Phyllocladus alpinus, Halocarpus bidwillii, and small-leaved shrubs.
At a third site, again in the Mackenzie Basin, Halocarpus bidwillii formed a complete scrub cover at the time of Maori settlement at about 800-600 yr B.P. but fire then rapidly reduced the scrub to grassland.
On the evidence of these and other southern South Island vegetation history records, the early Holocene appears to have had a relatively stable climate with moist summers.

in the Halocarpus (incorrectly referred to as a "warm indicator")
Retrospectively, the term "flood deposit" might have been clearer.
With regard to our use of Halocarpus as a "warm indicator," we were careful in our report to use "warm" in parentheses.
