Halong Bay is a body of water of approximately 1,500 square kilometres in north Vietnam with a 120 kilometre coastline, in the Gulf of Tonkin near the border with China, and 170 kilometres east of Hanoi.
The bay consists of a dense cluster of 1,969 limestone monolithic islands, each topped with thick jungle vegetation, which rise spectacularly from the ocean.
The bay was World Heritage listed by UNESCO at the 18th meeting of the Committee of the World Heritages of UNESCO (in Thailand on December 17th, 1994).

The reasons I went to Halong Bay six times are 1) the lovely scenery and 2) the friendly, cheap provincial extension office who cheerfully gave me a 10-minute, 2-dollar, thirty-day extension while explaining all the different Vietnamese military lapel insignias (with drawings) in French, Chinese, and Vietnamese (for free).
The trip from Hanoi to Halong Bay is fraught with bridge and ferry crossings.

Our visit to Halong Bay was a side trip for the NZ contingent prior to joining the Intrepid Gourmet Traveller.
Armed with the Lonely Planet which warned of dog being served at one of the restaurants and not being able to positively identify which restaurant was the one to avoid we returned to the hotel to eat what could be described as a less than average hotel meal (at least it was Vietnamese).
For our boat trip on the Bay we had a huge boat to ourselves, the crew, our guide My and a cook who produced a magnificent array of seafood treats on a single burner.
