The Lower Bure, Halvergate Fleet and Acle Marshes Drainage District extends to some 4,300 hectares of land between the tidal Rivers Yare and Bure in East Norfolk.
Halvergate Marshes is around one third of the area, 1,550 ha, and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the majority of which is also a Special Protection Area (SPA) and candidate Special Area of Conservation (cSAC).
In the early 1980's parts of Halvergate marshes were converted to arable agriculture, and the controversy stimulated the start of the ESA.
