		In sailing, a halyard is a line (rope) that is used to hoist (pull up) a sail or a yard to which a sail has been attached (bent on).
		Halyards, like most other parts of the running rigging, were classically made of natural fiber like manila or hemp.
		It is convention in some places to fasten the main halyard (for the mainsail) on the starboard side of the mast and the jib halyard to the port side.

		Some people argue that removing the weight of the main halyard, and reducing the compression on the mast should make you (imperceptibly) faster, and that the sail should be tied or otherwise fastened directly to the top of the mast.
		A wire halyard is used to pull the mainsail up, but rather than fastening the halyard at the bottom of the mast, a ball swaged onto the wire is cleverly jammed into a halyard lock, normally installed in the mast near the top.
		You have added the weight of the halyard and the halyard lock, but you still reduce the compression on the mast, and the headboard will be held at the correct height.

	Rigging the Pump Spinnaker Halyard
		The "pump" spinnaker halyard is an alternative to the 1:4 system that became popular with the advent of bag boats.

	The Prusik Knot
		Pass a bight around the halyard, then pass the ends thru the bight, around the halyard, and back thru the bight.
		I found holding onto the halyard with one hand up high while standing in the loops, and using the other hand to slide the chair Prusik at the same time worked well.
		I've found that it's important to tie off the bottoms of the halyards tightly; this both helps to prevent swinging and gives you something to pull against when you are sliding the knots.

	Fine Tuning a Roller Reefing System
		When you hoist the headsail with the proper halyard tension, look up at the system's swivel (use a pair of binoculars if necessary) to see how it positioned relative to the top of the mast.
		The swivel should be close to the halyard's exit sheave or block, and only a short length of halyard should be visible.
		If something is binding but the furling line is not jammed, the swivel turns freely, and the halyard is not wrapped, use binoculars to see if the top of the foild column extends to the top of the stay.

		Fish the main halyard out of the old spinnaker halyard sheave box hole, tape the spinnaker halyard to it, pull the main halyard up so that the spinnaker halyard can be seen at the new spinnaker halyard sheave box hole.
