Halyard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In sailing, a halyard is a line (rope) that is used to hoist (pull up) a sail or a yard to which a sail has been attached (bent on).
Halyards, like most other parts of the running rigging, were classically made of natural fiber like manila or hemp.
It is convention in some places to fasten the main halyard (for the mainsail) on the starboard side of the mast and the jib halyard to the port side.

Main Halyard Alternatives   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Some people argue that removing the weight of the main halyard, and reducing the compression on the mast should make you (imperceptibly) faster, and that the sail should be tied or otherwise fastened directly to the top of the mast.
A wire halyard is used to pull the mainsail up, but rather than fastening the halyard at the bottom of the mast, a ball swaged onto the wire is cleverly jammed into a halyard lock, normally installed in the mast near the top.
You have added the weight of the halyard and the halyard lock, but you still reduce the compression on the mast, and the headboard will be held at the correct height.

In Britain the topsail halyard purchase was taken down to the deck and the running part belayed abaft the aftermost shroud.
The spritsail halyard was attached to a block in the middle of the yard, reeved through a double or fiddle block on the bowsprit, and belayed to a cleat at the base of the bowsprit.

 Rigging the Pump Spinnaker Halyard
The "pump" spinnaker halyard is an alternative to the 1:4 system that became popular with the advent of bag boats.
Our halyard comes down the side of the trunk, goes through a small Harken cleat, bullet block on a pad eye 3" behind the cleat, bullet block floating with a handle (this is what you pull on), and then through the "Northfix" fitting which is about 2" behind the fixed bullet.
The halyard then runs aft to a fixed, double bullet and then forward to another floating double bullet (which the shock cord is attached to).

 Harken: Servicing a Harken Furler
Halyard wrap usually occurs when the sail is a little on the short side and doesn't run all the way up the length of the foil.
In other words, the halyard is running parallel to the foil and wants to rotate with the foil.
The halyard restrainer simply mounts to the mast and pulls the halyard away from the foils so that it doesn't wrap around the foils.

The spinnaker halyard comes through the deck on the port side of the mast and feeds to a cheek block mounted low on the tabernacle.
As to the rules,I don't believe this constitutes a "1:2" halyard because the bitter end of the halyard is not fixed and the twing block serves only as an "accelerator"--not as the sole means of moving the halyard.

I found holding onto the halyard with one hand up high while standing in the loops, and using the other hand to slide the chair Prusik at the same time worked well.
I've found that it's important to tie off the bottoms of the halyards tightly; this both helps to prevent swinging and gives you something to pull against when you are sliding the knots.

Halyards on which side? - Sailing Anarchy Forums
In the old days of external halyards and mast mounted winches, certain halyards had to be on certain sides to lead to the winch without chafing on the spreader bases.
This means the internal halyards must be on the correct side of the bar to prevent chafe and friction as the spar bends upwind.
The red halyard has to be on the port and the green has to be on the starboard side.

The throat halyard starts at the becket, is rove up through one sheeve of the double block from aft to forward, back down through the sheeve on the becket block from forward to aft, then back up around the other sheeve on the double block from aft to forward and down the mast.
But you start the peak halyard sheet at the end of the gaff, through a single block that is placed high on the mast, to a single block with an eye or fairlead that rides the bridle, then to a single block on the mast and down.
It might be better, he suggests, to reeve the halyard "the other way around" by having the halyard made fast to the inboard end (nearer the mast) of the gaff, and the hauling part comes from the block outboard near the end on the gaff.

Fine Tuning a Roller Reefing System
When you hoist the headsail with the proper halyard tension, look up at the system's swivel (use a pair of binoculars if necessary) to see how it positioned relative to the top of the mast.
The swivel should be close to the halyard's exit sheave or block, and only a short length of halyard should be visible.
If something is binding but the furling line is not jammed, the swivel turns freely, and the halyard is not wrapped, use binoculars to see if the top of the foild column extends to the top of the stay.

How to modify your 505 mast for the Long Luff Spinnaker
Fish the main halyard out of the old spinnaker halyard sheave box hole, tape the spinnaker halyard to it, pull the main halyard up so that the spinnaker halyard can be seen at the new spinnaker halyard sheave box hole.
The way that is measured is to hold the spinnaker halyard straight out from the sheave box, perpendicular to the mast, and measure to the bottom of the halyard (so we ignore the thickness of the halyard).
What you want to do is get the spinnaker halyard to emerge from the mast at the new hole, rather than the old hole, and you don't want to twist the spinnaker halyard around the main halyard while doing it.
